Lions Hold Their Own With Strong Showing at Princeton Relays

PRINCETON, NJ- Competing against a plethora of Division I opponents, as well as stellar competition from the Division II and III ranks, the Georgian Court University Track and Field team enjoyed a positive debut in 2010 at Saturday's Princeton Relays at Princeton University.

Freshman Lauren Calorel lead the charge finishing 2nd in the High Jump with a leap of 5’3".  Calorel was the only competitor with no misses through the first three heights but fell just short when the bar moved to 5’5", a NCAA qualifying height.  Fellow frosh, Mary Sancillo also cleared 5’3", but finished 7th due to misses at lower heights earlier in the competition. 

“Both Lauren and Mary had very good days and they both have an excellent shot at hitting 5’6" in the weeks to come and having a shot to go to the indoor NCAA’s,” said Head Coach Brett Harvey.

Calorel also ran a school record 8.34 in the 60m dash, with classmate Erin Frye a step behind in 8.41.

Freshman Justine Berger captured the unseeded section of the 3,000m in a school record 11:24.76 with Cynthia Cuiule finishing 3rd in 11:36.33.  “Justine and Cynthia ran nice patient races and both of them got faster and faster each lap.  It was great to see them make their track and field debut’s after both had such good cross country seasons,” said Harvey.

#KiaraThompson# finished 2nd in the unseeded section of the shot put with a school record throw of 38’5.50,” more than a foot better than her old school record in the event.  Freshman Alyssa Hudgins was just behind in 4th place with a throw of 37’6.5.”   “After waiting a long time to throw Kay-C and Alyssa did a great job competing and kicking off their season with some great throws.”

Also setting school records were freshmen Justine Elardo in the 60m hurdles (9.50) and Melissa Parato in the 500m (1:29.4).

The Lions will next be in action on February 5th at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York Armory and again on February 6th at the Ursinus Frank Colden Classic.
