GUATEMALA CITY – Georgian Court University sophomore
Candace Seaton scored off the underside of the crossbar in the 65th minute to give Trinidad & Tobago a 1-0 victory over Jamaica on Monday in a match for Caribbean pride at the CONCACAF Under-20 Women's Championship.
After having a shot pushed off the underside of the crossbar by Jamaican goalkeeper
Leigh-Ann Jaggon seven minutes earlier, Seaton used a piece of individual skill to give the Soca Princesses the victory. She took a ball down the right side, cut inside Jamaican defender
Lia Blake and took a touch inside the penalty area before deftly looping a right-footed shot just out of the reach of a stretching Jaggon that nicked the crossbar before settling in the back of the net.
It was the first goal for Trinidad in the tournament since
Natasha St. Louis scored in the first minute of its opening game against Mexico.
Jaggon thwarted Seaton in the 58th when the Trinidad winger hit a 25-meter shot that the goalkeeper had to push upward off the underside of the bar before it bounded out.
Seaton who was named to the NCAA/Daktronics 2nd Team All East Region this past fall was named the “Woman of the Match” for her effort. “It was a great thrill to score my first international goal, and for it to be the game winner made it even more special," said Seaton. Candace made her tournament debut two days earlier as a substitute in the 69th minute in a 4-0 loss to the eventual group B champions United States.
A number of her Georgian Court teammates watched the match together on-line and, when the goal was scored, a loud roar of excitement could be heard throughout the Athletic Department offices. “We were so happy and proud for Candace, it was like we were there with her. We wanted to cheer loud enough so that she could hear us from down there,” stated fellow sophomore
Shealyn Sullivan.
Seaton will return to Georgian Court shortly with confidence and the experience of a lifetime as she will begin preparation for the 2010 season. With the success of this tournament she will certainly be “called up” again to represent the Soca Princesses in the near future.
