GCU Softball Whacks Nyack, 10-0, 9-0 in Make-Up Double-Dip

LAKEWOOD, NJ -The Georgian Court University softball team, after having its doubleheader vs. Nyack College rained out twice, finally took the field vs. the Warriors Wednesday afternoon on the GCU campus. The Lions made quick work of the CACC opponent, blanking Nyack (2-15, 0-6 CACC) by scores of 10-0 and 9-0 in two five-inning contests.

With the twin-bill originally scheduled to be played at Nyack, the Lions were the "away" team on their home field. CF Jess Comiskey (pictured) led off the contest with her second dinger of the year. GCU (18-6, 5-1 CACC) made it 2-0 in the first as LF Rachel Ruch scored on a Kelsey Cutler RBI single after reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing second base.

GCU took a 5-0 advantage with three more tallies in the second. After smacking a one-out single, RF Chelsea Long scored from first on a Comiskey double to left. She then came home on a Ruch triple, which bounced atop the right field fence. DP Brooke Hull brought her in with a single to left.

The Lions poured on five more runs in the top of the fifth, a frame that included two-run doubles from Long and Ruch.

On the day she was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Week for the second time in her career, GCU ace Diana Sansevera yielded just one hit and two walks, while striking out 11, in the complete game effort. Sansevera (11-1) has now reached double digits in the "K" column in four straight outings.

Nyack's Sarah Bolles (Sr.- Wallingford, CT) suffered the loss in the circle (5.0 IP, 15 H, 10 R, 9 ER, BB, 3 K).

Game two's outcome was never in doubt as Georgian Court put three on the board in the first inning after the Lions crunched four straight hits to start the contest. Comiskey, 2B Sammie Jo Garofalo and Ruch smashed consecutive doubles, followed by a Hull single.

GCU put up another crooked number in the fourth as Ruch provided a two-run two-bagger and 1B Courtney Cuevas laced a ribbie single. The Lions sealed the deal when they increased the lead to 9-0 in the fifth on Comiskey's second homer of the day, this time of the two-run variety.

Comiskey finished the twin-bill going 4-for-8 at the dish with five runs and four RBI. Ruch compiled a 5-for-8 effort with five runs and six ribbies. Garofalo rapped five hits in seven at-bats.

Hull (3-1) went the distance for the Lions in the nightcap, allowing only two hits and striking out six in the five-inning, complete game effort.

Bolles was tagged with her second loss of the afternoon (5.0 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 6 ER, BB, 3 K).
