PISCATAWAY, NJ-The Georgian Court University Track and Field team braved 40 +mph winds to compete in the Rutgers University Invitational Saturday.
Leading the team was the freshman duo of Mary Sancilio and Lauren Calorel, who tied for the win in the high jump at 5’3. “Mary and Lauren did a great job staying patient in really adverse conditions and both came really close to 5’5 today. To do this under these conditions was really impressive,” said Head Coach Brett Harvey.
Also having standout days were Alyssa Hudgins, Justine Elardo, Amy Berry and Nicole Kalinowski.
Hudgins (pictured) threw lifetime bests in both the shot put (42’4.25) and discus (121’1). Her throw in the shot put shattered the school record by over 2 feet and moved her into the top-40 nationally. “Alyssa has had a monster year and is proving that in the coming years she has the ability to be a national force in three different events; she is going to be really special,” said Harvey.
Elardo raced to a 2nd place finish in the 100m hurdles in a school record and lifetime best time of 15.00. “This was bittersweet because we wanted a sub 15 so badly, “ said Harvey. “We know the next time she runs a personal best she has to break 15 to do it and we’re excited for that challenge,” he added.
Berry and Kalinowski both recorded personal bests as Berry got the javelin out to 111’05 and Kalinowski through a 10 foot personal best in the hammer with a hurl of 123’8.
The meet marked the end of the Lions regular season. They will now await national selections to see if high jumper Calorel makes the NCAA Championships. She currently sits 23rd on the National List with her jump of 5’6 at the Lions Invitational in April.
