Lakewood, N.J. - A lopsided third quarter in LIU Post's favor proved to be the difference-maker Tuesday evening as the visiting Explorers escaped Georgian Court University with a 75-70 non-conference road victory over the Lions in the GCU Wellness Center.
Up just one point at intermission (42-41), LIU Post pounded the Lions, 23-8, in the third stanza to build a healthy 65-49 advantage heading into the final 10:00. Georgian Court (1-3) doubled up its guest in the period, 21-10, but the damage had already been done to the wounded felines.
"We knew coming in that this would be a very physical game," stated GCU head coach,
Jazz Perazic, after the loss. We thought we were ready, but LIU Post was still able to get way too many loose balls and second-chance points. I am proud our effort, especially after we fell behind in double digits. We still need to work on playing more to each others' strengths. We must continue to work on our chemistry. Our defense is getting better and better. I have no doubt that this will be an exciting and much improved season for us."
Four Pioneers achieved double-digits in the win, led by
Mikaiya Moore (So.-Amityville, N.Y.) and her 17 points. Teammate
Sasha Patterson (Sr.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) scripted a double-double performance of 12 points and game-high 13 boards.
Shannon Doyle (Jr.-Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) drained 16 points while
Naya Williams (Sr.-New Rochelle, N.Y.) provided an even 10 for LIU Post (2-3).
Two-time CACC Honor Roll selection,
Jaelyn Tweedy, tickled the twine with her team-best 17 points.
Catherine Phipps poured in a season-high 13 for the Lions while
Nerea Brajac and
Alba Herrero-Gomez reached double-digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Georgian Court returns to the hardwood Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. home game vs. Assumption College.
