Medical Services
An athletic trainer will be on-site for all on-campus team practices and home events. Hours of operation vary season to season, week to week and day to day. Generally, an athletic trainer is available for scheduled rehab and new injury evaluations most mornings and will be on-site 1 hour before the start of each practice and 2 hours before each game. An athletic trainer will remain available for at 30 minutes after scheduled end time of practice or end of game.
Office of Athletic Training Program Goals
The Office of Athletic Training delivers athletic training and sports medicine services to the student-athletes of Georgian Court University. The health and welfare of the student-athlete is always regarded as the highest priority in all aspects of services provided. These services include:
- Injury Prevention and Risk Management
- Recognition, Evaluation and Assessment of Injuries and Illnesses
- Immediate Care of Injuries and Illnesses
- Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reconditioning
- Health Care Organization and Administration
The Student-Athlete Medical Team
The GCU athletic training staff is the keystone of the Student-Athlete Medical Team which is made up of multi-disciplinary health care professionals who provide medical care to GCU athletes. Georgian Court athletic trainers work under the supervision of the team physician. The athletic trainers and team physician interact regularly either in person or via phone/email/fax so as to provide the best care to GCU athletes. This ongoing communication will guide decisions regarding treatment and return to play. The team physician always has final say regarding participation. Athletic Trainers work as an extension of the physician and are able to make decisions based on clinical experience, sound medical judgment, and communication between the student-athlete medical team, coaches, and athletes.
The Office of Athletic Training has established relationships with other providers to whom we may make referrals. One such relationship that has been long-standing is with Professional Orthopedic Associates. These doctors hold regular orthopedic clinic hours on the GCU campus to evaluate and treat athletes and dancers. When athletes are seen by providers who work with GCU athletics regularly, communication is streamlined which typically leads to improved quality and continuity of care. Athletes are free to see any provider of their own choosing, but must provide documentation of all medical care received before being return to play. The team physician has the ultimate authority to make final decisions regarding participation.
Kessler Rehabilitation Center
Kessler Rehabilitation Center is the official athletic training services provider for Georgian Court University. Our athletic trainer works as an extension of their sports teams focusing on injury prevention, management and performance for the athletes. Our nearby physical therapy centers provide the physical therapy expertise necessary to help your athletes stay safe and keep playing their sport.
Assisting the Athletes
Kessler Rehabilitation Center provides the best sports medicine support to your school.
At the collegiate level, our athletic trainers are focused on three things:
- Being on-site, visible participants: We manage injuries, safety, performance and health of the athletes. We take care of injuries on the field, whether it’s first aid, head or neck injuries, cardiac issues or emergency care. We are proactive and make safety recommendations as well to coaches and athletes.
- Managing the athletic training room: We are on-site, order necessary supplies and create emergency action plans. After school, we evaluate students to determine who needs quick care, further evaluation and a referral to a physician or specialist. We also manage concussion programs to ensure your athletes receive concussion evaluation and treatment quickly.
- Coordinating appropriate care: If an athlete needs additional care or support, our team will connect them to physical therapists, physicians, nurses or psychologists.
Our athletic trainers are connected to a local center and have the support of physical and occupational therapists. We enhance that clinical connection with physical therapists who visit your school and act as a backup therapist providing informed, thoughtful advice on your program.
Our nearby physical therapy centers offer services outside of sports medicine as well. With service offerings that include balance and dizziness, orthopedic rehabilitation and work conditioning, Kessler Rehabilitation Center can help get the entire family back to what they love.

Emergency Procedures

The emergency action plan outlines the actions of the emergency response team which includes coaches, instructors, athletic trainers, physicians, nurses, security personnel, and others. When appropriate, EMS can be contacted by dialing 9-1-1. Whenever 9-1-1 is called, campus security should also be notified (ext. 2611). Below are some other phone numbers you may find useful. Please also note that there are currently 5 AED units on the GCU campus. One is mounted for public accessibility in the main lobby of the Wellness Center. The others are portable units held by: Athletic Training, Health Services, and Security.
