Lions Unable to Hold On in 73-58 Besting by Bridgeport

Lakewood, N.J.- After never trailing by more than three at any point in the first half, Georgian Court University was outscored, 12-2, to commence the third quarter as the University of Bridgeport took the frame, 17-8, before securing a 73-58 non-conference road win Saturday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center.

The Lions (0-7) escaped the first period with a slight 18-16 lead. After three ties and a pair of lead changes in the second, the Purple Knights rode into intermission owning a 31-29 surplus. U of B built that advantage to 11 points (48-37) after its aforementioned third-period pouncing and never led by less than nine in the fourth-and-final session en route to its third win of the season (3-3).

Samnell Vonleh (Sr.-Swamscott, Mass.) topped all players with 25 points, 21 of which took place in the first half for Bridgeport, to go along with a game-high nine boards and four blocked shots. Sarah Middleton (Sr.-Barrington, R.I.) added 15 points for the victors while Briana Stoddart (Jr.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered 10 points in the win.

For the Lions, Safiyyah Lee drained a season-best 17 points, which included 7-for-8 shooting from the charity stripe. Destiny Thompson contributed 16 points for the home team while Carna Prokic and Jada Atchison set the stage with seven and five assists, respectively.

GCU now prepares for its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference competition of 2018-19 with a visit to Goldey-Beacom College Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
