Bloomfield, N.J. - The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad left it all on the floor Saturday afternoon as the Lions eventually ran out of steam in an 80-72 defeat at Bloomfield College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
The host-Bears took the first quarter by a count of 21-18 before the Lions roared back with a 25-19 surplus in the second frame to scoot into intermission with a 43-40 lead. GCU would lead as late as the 4:49 mark of the third period (51-50) before a
Bobbi Floyd (Jr.-Las Vegas, Nev.) layup (4:29) concluded a 12-8 spurt to take a 52-51 advantage.Â
Bloomfield (15-11, 14-4 CACC) would not trail again in the contest as the Bears proceeded to close out the with a six-point lead of 61-55. The home team went ahead by a game-high 10 points after a
Kiamsha Bynes (Sr.-Piscataway, N.J.) jumper put BC up by the score of 76-66 with 3:31 left. The Lions would not be able to cut the deficit to less than eight points the rest of the way, which they did on three separate occasions over the final 3+ minutes of regulation.
The Bears took full advantage of 19 GCU miscues, draining 27 points off the unfortunate miscues.
"Our team fought," stated GCU head coach
Jazz Perazic. "I thought everyone played with great energy. The size difference was just something we couldn't overcome. Bloomfield was able to get way too many offensive boards. I am really proud of our team's focus, energy and intensity."Â
Floyd registered a hearty double-double for the Bears, draining 16 points and snaring a mighty 21 boards.
Zhane Thompson (Sr.-Newark, N.J.) rallied for her own double-double effort with a game-high 32 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
Deja McKenzie (Jr.-Baltimore, Md,) reached double digits in the scoring column with 11 points in the win.
Four Lions achieved 10+ points in the outing, topped by senior
Jaelyn Tweedy with 18, including a 4-of-9 performance from the three-point line.
Destiny Thompson earned her second double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 boards while
Carna Prokic and
Jess Placher dropped in 15 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lions.
Georgian Court now returns home for its final two games of the season, starting with a 6:00 p.m. CACCÂ contest Wednesday evening vs. Wilmington University.
