Myrtle Beach, S.C.- The Georgian Court University softball squad closed out its five-game weekend appearance in the Myrtle Beach Snowbird Freeze Out Sunday morning as the Lions dropped an 8-3 regional decision to Saint Anselm College.
The Lions plated the first run of the contest immediately in the top of the first frame after a
Malia Black lead-off single and a
Caitlin Hughes two-bagger to right-center set the stage for
Malaya Black's ribbie groundout, which drove in her speedy sister from third base.
Things soured quickly, however, for Georgian Court as the Hawks proceeded to rattle off eight unanswered runs to take a commanding 8-1 lead after five innings. GCU managed to bring across an unearned run in both the sixth and seventh stanzas, but could not string together enough offense to dent the deficit.
Morgan Perry (So.-Bethany, Conn.) earned the win for the 4-1 Hawks (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) while
Courtney Fisher (Fr.-Taunton, Mass.) collected the three-inning save (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K).
Jennifer Tellefsen (1-1) lasted just an inning-and-a-third in the start for the Lions, permitting four runs (2 ER) on six hits and a base-on-balls.
Hughes collected a pair of hits for GCU while Malaya drove in two of the team's three runs on the day.
Georgian Court (2-3) now journeys back home to Lakewood before setting sail on their annual 12-game journey to the Sunshine State the first weekend of March. The Lions will take on the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (2:00 p.m.) and Concordia University-St. Paul (4:30 p.m.) on Sunday, March 4 in Clermont, Fla.
