Lakewood, N.J. - The women's basketball senior duo of
Jess Placher and
Jaelyn Tweedy suited up in the royal and gold for the final time Saturday afternoon vs. Felician University as the pair was honored during a special pregame ceremony in the GCU Wellness Center.
This did not represent the only highlight by the tandem as Placher proceeded to net 18 points and Tweedy registered her 1,000th career point, capping a double-double effort in the Lions' eventual 71-66 overtime setback vs. the Golden Falcons.
Needing only four points to reach the milestone mark, Tweedy's three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter pushed the senior star into the GCU record book.
Playoff-bound Felician (10-16, 8-11 CACC) edged the Lions by an 18-16 count in the first frame. Each team poured in 13 apiece in the second to assure the Golden Falcons of an ever-so-slim 31-29 lead heading into intermission.
Felician would increase its advantage to a game-high 10 points at 5:29 of the third when a pair of
Kameron Stone (Jr.-Bronx, N.Y.) free throws put the visitors ahead, 41-31. The Lions proceeded to cut the deficit to three (43-40) by closing the quarter with a 9-2 spurt, capped by a Placher three-ball with 24 ticks left.
The Lions (5-21, 3-16 CACC) claimed the lead (45-44) after another Placher three-pointer with 7:42 left in regulation and eventual expanded to a five-point surplus when yet another Placher downtown deposit put GCU ahead, 52-47, with 4:50 remaining.
Destiny Thompson's jumper at the 3:48 marked maintained the Lions' five-point cushion (54-49) before the Golden Falcons swooped in with a 6-1 run over the remaining minutes, capped by a Stone jump shot with 28 seconds on the clock, to tie the contest at 55 and force the extra session.
With the score knotted at 57-57, Felician proceeded to deposit the game's next six points to take a sturdy 63-57 lead that would prove to hold strong until the final buzzer.
"I am so proud of our effort today." stated GCU head coach
Jazz Perazic. "We really wanted to get a win for our two seniors. We started the game a little uptight, mostly because everyone wanted this game so badly. Even though we did not come up with a win, there were so many positives about this game. A couple of turnovers really cost us late in the OT, but again, I can only say that our team truly plays as a team. That has been the goal this entire season and I believe we have achieved it."
" We will miss Jaelyn and Jess tremendously, but we will forever be grateful for all their effort throughout their careers that helped us establish a strong foundation for years to come ... Thank you!"
Placher closes her career with an 18-point effort consisting of four three-pointers over 40 minutes of action. Tweedy achieved her team-best fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 boards, to go along with six helpers and a pair of steals. Thompson closed out her season with 12 points and eight rebounds,
Stone paced the Golden Falcons 23 points in the win while
Bionca Chambers (Fr.-New Milford, N.J.) and
Shana Owen (Sr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) deposited 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Kristin Smith (So.-Hainesport, N.J.) grabbed 11 boards, complemented by her seven points and three blocks.
