Garden City, N.Y. - Rebounding from a forgettable first game, Georgian Court University held off host-Adelphi University in the nightcap, 3-1, to earn a hard-fought split Saturday in NCAA Division II regional softball action. The twin-bill was originally scheduled for March 14, but postponed due to snow on Long Island.
The Lions (9-10), playing for the first time since last Saturday in Florida, appeared to be less than willing to brave the northeast elements in the opener as GCU suffered a blistering 16-0, five-inning setback to the Panthers. Adelphi, benefiting from 14 hits and five Georgian Court miscues, plated multiple runs in all five frames. A three-run dinger from
Nicoletta Cuccio, and a grand slam off the bat of
Emily Turney, highlighted an eight-run barrage by the home team.
Kristin Fealy fired four innings of one-hit ball (5 BB) to earn the win for the Panthers.
Taylor Baloga suffered the loss for GCU (0.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB).
Caitlin Hughes collected the Lions' lone hit in the contest.
After three innings of scoreless softball in game two,
Samantha Salomon snapped the stalemate in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly. The Georgian Court left-fielder added to the surplus in the sixth frame with a ribbie fielder's choice before being brought around herself, courtesy of a
Samantha Reilly two-bagger, making the score 3-0 Lions.
Baloga, making her second start of the day, relinquished a lone run in the home half of the sixth, but still went the distance as the sophomore earned her second victory (2-4) of the season (7.0 IP, 10 H, 1 R, 1 ER 3 K).
The Panthers dip to 5-10 on the year with the loss.
Georgian Court commences Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition Tuesday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Holy Family University.
