Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University offense continues to scramble the softball as the Lions, hosting Post University, earned two wins over the Eagles behind 15 runs on 19 hits in Saturday's Easter Eve sweep. The victories increase GCU's winning streak to four straight and improve the squad's overall mark to 13-12 (4-2 CACC).
Caitlin Hughes' second long ball of the year set the tone immediately as the Lions plated seven runs during their initial trip to the plate.
Jessica O'Neil did the rest as the junior hurler mowed down Post the rest of the way, firing six shutout frames en route to her fifth victory of the year (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K).
Hughes led off the sixth with a double down the right-field line before coming in with win-clinching tally, courtesy of
Samantha Salomon's ribbie single through the left side. The two-bagger provided the sweet-swinging freshman her third straight three-hit effort (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), which fell a single short of the cycle.
Malaya Black also enjoyed a three-hit offering in the win, highlighted by a ribbie single in the first.
In the nightcap, Georgian Court planted yet another seven-run frame on Post, this time in the second inning, to take a 7-0 lead. The Eagles (6-12, 4-2 CACC), refusing to be again dismissed via the mercy rule, ruined the Lions' bid for a second straight blanking, as the visitors plated five in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run dinger off the bat of
Sara Selimovski.
O'Neil (6-4) enjoyed a two-win afternoon in the circle for the Lions, this time yielding two runs (2 ER) on seven hits (2 K) over 6.1 innings of work.
Samantha Reilly was perfect at the plate with her 3-for-3 performance.
Mikaela Power went 2-for-2 with a double while Black blasted a two-run homer in the second, the freshman's second of the season.
GCU looks to continue its momentum as the Lions host Goldey-Beacom College Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. on SEI Investments Field.
