Lafayette Hill, Pa. -Georgian Court University earned the first-ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular-season crown Tuesday evening as the Lions escaped Chestnut Hill College with a 10-8 victory to remain a perfect 4-0 (8-6 overall) in conference.
The win clinches the #1 seed for the Lions in next week's inaugural CACCÂ Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament, which will be hosted by Georgian Court on April 27 (semifinals) and 29 (championship game).
After completing a back-and-forth first half with a slim 4-3 lead, the Lions proceeded to net two of the initial three goals of the second stanza to increase their surplus to 6-4 with 7:54 remaining in the third period. The Griffins (5-9, 2-2 CACC) responded by rattling off four straight unanswered tallies to soar to an 8-6 advantage with 11:05 left in regulation.
Georgian Court, showing the mettle that it has put on display for most of the campaign, answered with a four-goal run of its own.
Ryder Verdoni and
Jeffrey Galatola ripped a goal each at 10:37 and 8:45, respectively, to kick-start the rally.
Michael Saladino then proceeded to pour in the game-winner at 3:24 after gathering a Galatola feed.
Verdoni added an insurance goal with 59 ticks remaining to clinch the win ... and the regular-season crown. Saladino registered three goals on the night, increasing the senior's conference-leading total to 35 on the season.
Austin Geissel, the reigning CACCÂ Defensive Player of the Week, again shined in the GCU net with 13 clutch saves over 60:00 of action. The sophomore shot-stopper improves to 8-5 on the year.
The Lions close out the regular-season slate this Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. CACCÂ contest at Post University.
