Lakewood, N.J. - In a make-up of Sunday's rain-related postponement, Georgian Court University welcomed Mercy College to SEI Investments Field Tuesday where the visiting Mavericks slugged their way to a pair of five-inning affairs vs. the host Lions in NCAA Division II non-conference softball action.
Mercy (18-13) mashed 21 hits, seven of which were home runs, in the two-game sweep as the Mavericks easily trotted to triumphs of 11-1 and 11-3.
After two scoreless frames for both squads, Mercy plated a pair of runs in the top of third, followed by a six-spot in the fourth and three more in the fifth, to end the opening contest early.
Skania Lemus (Sr.-Chula Vista, Calif.) provided a sneak peek of what was to come as the Mavericks' third baseman posted a 3-for-4 showing with two runs scored. SS
Cassidy Wootten (Sr.-Ardsley, N.Y.) blasted a two-run homer in the fourth to make the score 8-0 Mercy.
Raina Gorman (Jr.-Ardsley, N.Y.) limited the Lions to three hits in the complete-game effort (5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Marissa Trezza dropped to 2-3 in the circle for GCU (5.0 IP, 12 H, 11 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).
In the nightcap, the always-present Georgian Court jet stream was in full force as both teams combined for eight long balls. Six came off of Mercy bats, half of which were slugged by Lemus, resulting in six RBI for the senior.
Destini Bullock (So.-San Diego, Calif.),
Morgan Lloyd (Sr.-East Lyme, Conn.) and
Baylee McCormick (Sr.-Las Vegas, Nev.) also connected for home runs in the rout.
The highlight of Georgian Court's afternoon came in the bottom of the third when
Samantha Reilly deposited a two-run shot over the center field wall. The blast marked the 17th of the season for Reilly, tying the school record established by
Lisa Hollis back in 2001. Trezza also deposited a dinger for the home team, a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Yazzy Jameson (Jr.-San Diego, Calif.) went the distance for the Mavericks to move to 7-4 on the year after her complete-game performance (5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). GCU starter,
Taylor Baloga (5-6), suffered the loss (3.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 BB).
The Lions (20-17) return to CACC action Wednesday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. twin-bill at Dominican College.
