Lakewood, N.J.- A
Haley Jones two-run long ball snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth inning of Game Two vs. Queens College Monday evening as Georgian Court University secured a 4-1 win, and salvaged a split in non-conference softball action on SEI Investments Field.
In the nightcap, zeros filled the scoreboard for the first four-and-a-half frames. Queens starting pitcher,
Vanessa Juengerkes (Sr.-Islip, N.Y.), carried a no-hitter into the home half of the fifth before
Marissa Trezza broke up the bid with a one-out single to right. The stage was now set for Jones as the freshman crunched a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for her second dinger of the year, and the eventual game-winning knock.
A long
Malaya Black two-run laser to left in the sixth accounted for the Lions' last two tallies, giving the Georgian Court right-fielder four homers on the season.
Jessica O'Neil (15-7), pitching 4.1 innings of stellar relief, earned the win (4 H, 1 R,1 ER, 4 K). The senior stopper entered the game by inheriting a one-out bases-loaded jam before promptly striking out the first batter she faced, followed by a ground out, to escape unscathed.
Juengerkes (6-10) went the distance in the setback (6.0 IP), yielding four runs (4 ER) on four hits and two walks (3 K).
Trailing 2-1 after two-and-a-half,
Caitlin Hughes put the team on her back in the home half the third, knotting the score at 2-all with her seventh homer of the year. Queens took matters into their own hands in the top of the fourth, plating three runs courtesy of a
Danielle D'Angelo (Fr.-Mastic Beach, N.Y.) solo home run and a
Tonimarie Valeriano (Sr.-Bellmore, N.Y.) two-run double.
The Knights (13-21) tacked on another pair in the seventh to seal the win.
Lauren Pasqual (Jr.-Woodland Hills, Calif.) improved to 1-2 for Queens with the complete-game victory (7.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 5 K) while
Taylor Baloga (5-8) took the loss in the seven-inning effort (7 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 6 BB, 4 K).
Georgian Court (26-19) gears up for its final regular-season home contests Wednesday afternoon vs. Wilmington University at 2:30 p.m. The Lions will honor seniors
Jacqueline Coulahan and
Cassie Varvaro in a special pregame Senior Day ceremony.
