Softball Gears Up For Postseason By Sinking Clippers in Saturday Sweep

Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University, gearing up for its first postseason appearance since 2015, closed out the regular season in emphatic fashion Saturday as the Lions crunched Concordia College, 8-0 and 12-0, in two five-inning affairs Saturday afternoon on GCU's SEI Investments Field.

Serving as the visiting team on their own diamond due to poor field conditions on Concordia's campus, the Lions certainly did not provide any comforts of home to the Clippers as Georgian Court plated a run in all but one of the ten innings played, while mashing 19 overall hits.

Georgian Court kicked off the opener with a three-spot in the top of the first, highlighted by Samantha Reilly's twenty-first long ball of the year, a screaming two-run shot over the left-field fence. The Lions added two more in the second, thanks to Caitlin Hughes' tenth triple of the year, which brought in a run, and a Samantha Salomon sacrifice fly. A single tally in each of the third, fourth, and fifth frames provided GCU the eight-run cushion it needed to end the contest early.

Jessica O'Neil improved to 16-9 on the year with the complete-game victory (5.0 IP, 5 H, ) R, ) ER, 2 BB, 4 K). Sarah Ross (3-11) suffered the Concordia setback (5.0 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K).

Malaya Black (2-for-3, R) and Kendalia Turner (2-for-2, 2B, R, RBI) contributed multi-hit efforts in the rout.

It was more of the same in the nightcap, as Reilly reinforced her National Player of the Year candidacy as the junior clubbed #22 in her first at bat, another two-run blast to left, to contribute to a four-run first frame for the Lions.

Reilly wrapped up her showcase in the second, drilling her third homer of the afternoon, this time a two-run shot to center, to put GCU comfortably ahead 6-0 after one-and-a-half. The Lions plated two more in the third to make it 8-0 before adding a four-spot in the fourth, capped by Marissa Trezza's solo shot to left.

Taylor Baloga fired a complete-game one-hitter in the circle as the sophomore improved to 5-9 with the win (5.0 IP, 4 BB, 3 K). MacKenna Powell (1-4) took the loss for the Clippers (5,0 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2K).

The Lions (28-21, 18-8 CACC) now await their postseason assignment, which will be known Monday evening.
