Orangeburg, N.Y.- Georgian Court University and Nyack College went toe-to-toe Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action as each squad secured a mercy-induced victory in the back-and-forth double-dip.
The Warriors (6-20, 3-9 CACC) came out swinging in the opener, stunning GCU in five innings by a score of 10-2. Trailing 1-0 after three-and-a-half frames, Nyack unloaded for six runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to leave the Lions standing on the diamond in the walk-off victory. The home team belted 13 hits in the contest.
Nicole Wisser (4-6) went the distance to earn the pitching decision for Nyack as the sophomore permitted the two runs (1 ER) on five hits, three walks and 4 strikeouts. J
essica O'Neil (8-5) suffered the setback (3.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 K). The loss snapped the Lions' season-best, six-game winning streak.
GCU (16-13, 7-3 CACC) returned the favor in the nightcap as the Lions unleashed the fury with nine runs on 14 hits to wallop the Warriors, 9-1, in another five-inning finale.
Samantha Reilly started the scoring as he junior slugged a solo homer in the first frame. GCU added a pair in the second to make the score 3-0 before the Lions plated three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh stanzas to secure the conference split.
Reilly went deep again for her league-leading 11th dinger a two-run shot, in the fourth inning to finish the contest 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Mikaela Power continues to swing a solid bat as the junior went 3-for-3 with a run and ribbie. Five other Lions registered two hits each in the win, including
Haley Jones, who went 2-for-3 with her first collegiate home run, a solo sot in the fifth inning.
O'Neil bounced back in the contest to earn the junior her ninth win (9-5) of the season (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K).
Georgian Court now returns home to host Goldey-Beacom College Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for the Lions' third CACC twin-bill in as many days.
