Lakewood, N.J. - A successful three-pointer with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter etched
Jada Atchison's name in the Georgian Court University annals as the graduate student eclipsed the 1,000-mark for her career in the Lions 73-67 non-conference setback to Assumption College.
The contest concluded the 2019 GCU Tip-Off Tournament with Southern New Hampshire University holding off Concordia College (NY), 77-74, in Sunday's opener.
Georgian Court poured in the first nine points of its outing vs. Assumption and went on to own an 11-2 lead just 2:24 into the game.
Safiyyah Lee (seven points) drilled a three-pointer 1:20 left in the opening period to give the Lions a 10-point lead of 18-8. The resilient Greyhounds responded with a 6-0 spurt to close the first, cutting its deficit to 18-14.
Assumption stayed hot to start the second, outscoring GCU by an 18-9 margin in the session. Trailing 22-19 after a
Hanna Thrainsdottir (eight points) layup at the 5:09 mark, the Greyhounds raced for a 13-0 run to take a solid 32-22 advantage 1:35 before intermission.
Trailing by 11 points (42-31) 3:30 into the third quarter, the Lions lit up for a 15-5 run of its own, capped by Atchison's milestone bucket, to cut the Assumption lead to just one (47-46) with 2:40 left. After taking a four-point advantage into the final period, the Greyhounds increased the lead to 12 on a pair of occasions in the frame.
The Lions battled to the final buzzer as
Nerea Brajac's layup with only 18 ticks remaining in regulation concluded a 13-4 GCU spurt that put the home team to within three points of its guest (69-66). Unfortunately, that would be as close as Georgian Court would get as Assumption would hold off its host, 4-1, over the final ticks to secure the victory.
Brianna Capacchione (Sewell, N.J.) topped all players with her 26 points and five steals as the junior netted a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Temi Falayi (So.-Peabody, Mass.) authored a double-double consisting of 17 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Â
As for the Lions, Atchison collected team highs of 23 points (8-of-8 from the free-throw line), seven rebounds (tied with Lee) and five helpers to close out an incredible two-game weekend (57 points, 23-of-25 FT, 17 rebounds). Brajac poured in 15 points in the effort and swiped a trio of steals.
Ivona Krakic, a day after her season-opening double-double vs. SNHU, registered 12 points and five rejections on Sunday. Â
After traveling to Delaware State University on Saturday for an exhibition game, the Lions (1-1) return to NCAA Division II action on Wednesday, November 20 when Georgian Court hosts Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 8:00 p.m.
