Albany, N.Y.- Taking the floor for the final day of the Saint Rose Holiday Classic (as well the last contest of the 2019 calendar year), Georgian Court University heads into the extended winter break feeling festive as the Lions cruised to a 76-54 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon over American International College.
The Lions came out hungry with a dominant 19-6 advantage after the initial 10 minutes of action. AÂ
Safiyyah Lee layup at the 9:29 mark of the second increased the GCU surplus to 15 (21-6) before the Yellow Jackets (4-9) stung for a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to four (25-21) with 4:47 remaining before the half.
Georgian Court, unaffected by the AIC push, mounted a run of its own by closing the stanza with a 16-3 spurt to take a commanding 37-24 lead into the locker room. It would be smooth sailing the rest of the way for the Lions as GCU's cushion would remain in double-digits, growing as high as 24 points (64-39) with 6:07 left in the game.
Four Lions reached registered 10 or more points in the victory, highlighted by Lee and her third double-double effort of the week. The senior poured in 19 points and snagged 10 boards, accompanied by her four helpers, three blocks and three steals. The Camden, N.J. native has averaged an astounding 19.7 points-per-game and 13.3 rebounds-per-game over her three outings this week.
Nerea Brajac (five steals, four assists) and
Ivona Krakic (three blocks) poured in 12 points apiece while
Savawn Hughes contributed 10 points of her own in the rout.
Nadia Wooten paced the Yellow Jackets with a team-best 11 points off the AIC bench.
GCU (3-7) returns to action on Saturday, January 4 (1:00 p.m.) with a visit to CACCÂ foe, Nyack College.
