Lakewood, N.J. - In its second straight contest in which both teams failed to reach double-digits in the scoring column, Georgian Court University, yet again, finds itself on the losing end as the Lions dropped a frustrating 9-8 decision to visiting Wheeling Jesuit University Tuesday afternoon in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action.
The defeat drops GCU to 1-2 on the young season while the Cardinals collect their first win on the year (1-4).
WJU opened the game by netting four of the first five tallies to take a 4-1 lead with 5:55 to go in the first half. The Lions roared all the way back to capture a 5-4 advantage, capped by
Daniel Burnham's third goal of day at 2:38 in the third period of action.
Not to be outdone, the Cardinals fired home four straight goals of their own to reclaim the lead at 8-5 with 7:52 left in regulation. A pair of
Patrick Quinn scoring efforts book-ended a three-goal rally for GCU, knotting the score at 8-all with just 4:04 to go.
Overtime loomed until Wheeling's
Jamison Smith (Sr.-Butler, Pa.)Â clinched the road win for the Cardinals after slinging home the game-winner with 1:02 on the clock.
Smith topped all scorers with four goals (5 points) in the triumph while teammate,
Travis Getz (Sr.-Calgary, Alberta), connected on a hat trick for Wheeling Jesuit.
Michael Schonhiutt (Sr.-Westerville, Ohio) added a tally and a pair of helpers.
Burnham registered the first three goals of his brief collegiate career, finishing the afternoon with four total points. Quinn now leads the team with six goals on the season after his pair in this contest.
Devin Bell,
Randy Collins, and
Tanner Lee each provided a goal and an assist in the loss.
PJ Campion (So.-McLean, Va.) takes home the "W" in the WJU net after compiling seven saves in the complete-game performance.
Christopher Mulholland, in his first start of the season, performed well for the Lions, pocketing 14 saves over his 60 minutes of action.
Georgian Court owned a 37-33 shot advantage. The Cardinals made more of their opportunities, however, outshooting the Lions, 23-15, on frame.
GCU now preps for its first-ever visit to Florida as the Lions visit #9 Saint Leo University this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
