Postseason Run Comes to Close for Women's Hoops With 70-54 Loss to Top-Seed USciences

Caldwell, N.J. - The highly-successful 2018-19 women's basketball campaign came to a close Saturday evening as Georgian Court University succumbed to the #1 overall seed, University of the Sciences, by a 70-54 score in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament semifinals.

The Devils, now 29-1, will next take on #2 seed (South) Jefferson in Sunday's title game as the Lady Rams erased #3 seed (South) Goldey-Beacom College, 80-56, in the evening's other semifinal contest.

Taking the court in postseason action for the first time since 2003, the Lions held strong for a majority of the first quarter as the two squads were knotted in an 11-all stalemate with 3:36 to go in the initial frame. The Devils fired up its offense at that moment, closing the period with a 9-0 run to go ahead 20-11.

The lead would climb as high as 18 points for USciences in the second quarter as an Alex Thomas (Sr.-Hockessin, Del.) lay-in increased the Devils' surplus to 31-13 with 6:27 remaining before intermission.

Trailing by 14 coming out of the break (41-27), Georgian Court came out on a 14-9 tear to dip its deficit to nine after a Carna Prokic lay-up and subsequent free throw made the score 50-41 Devils with 2:24 left in the third.

As they did in the first quarter, USciences again finished with a flurry in the third as the Devils mounted a 10-4 spurt to enter the final session with a 60-45 advantage. The outcome was anticlimactic from this point as the Devils' lead would never dip below double-digits the rest of the way.

Irisa Ye (So.-North Wales, Pa.) topped the victors with 22 points in the win, shooting 8-of-13 from the floor. Jordan Vitelli (Jr.-Warrington, Pa.) followed with 14 points while Thomas and Jess Huber (So.-Hatfield, Pa.) registered 11 and 10 points, respectively.

As for the Lions (13-16), Prokic carried the GCU offense with 14 points over 40 full minutes as the senior never left the court in her final collegiate contest. Ivona Krakic closed out her initial campaign with 10 points and eight boards.
