Kissimmee, Fla. - After taking Monday off, Georgian Court University softball returned to the diamond in a big way Tuesday as the Lions bopped the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan College, 12-2, in six frames for a fourth-straight victory in the annual PFX Spring Games.
GCU concluded the afternoon with a nightcap showdown vs. the #1 team in the country, Saint Anselm College, as the top-ranked Hawks cooled the Lions' bats in a 3-0 shutout.
GAME ONE
Georgian Court (8-3) plated runs in all but one inning, including four-spots in both the second and six stanza, as the Lions exploded for 12 hits in the opening rout of WVSU (4-6).Â
A first-inning RBI single from
Marissa Trezza opened the scoring for the Lions while
Samantha Reilly's third home run of the year, a three-run blast, highlighted GCU's four-run second. After bringing around a pair in the fourth, and one more in the fifth, Georgian Court added the necessary tallies in the sixth to mercy-rule their foe.
Paige Eckert capped a 3-for-4 showing at the dish with a two-run shot in the sixth, the transfer's first dinger sporting the royal and gold. Three other teammates also registered multi-hit performances in the victory, including:
Caitlin Hughes (2-for-3, 3 R, RBI),
Samantha Salomon (2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Trezza (2-for-3, 2B, R, 3 RBI).
Bobbie Beck, a junior transfer from Galloway, N.J., fired off four scoreless innings of relief (2 H) to earn her first victory with the Lions (1-1). West Virginia Wesleyan starting pitcher,
Kelley Bourne (So.-Chandler, Ariz.) suffered the loss for the Bobcats (5.0 IP, 8 R, 7 ER, 8 H, 4 BB).
GAME TWO
A trio of tallies in the fourth inning was all Saint Anselm would need in the day's second contest as the #1 Hawks held off the Lions to improve to 8-3 on the year.
Saint Anslem starter,
Morgan Perry (Jr.-Bethany, Conn.) limited GCU to a lone infield hit as the right-hander went the distance (7.0 IP, 1 H, 7 K) to improve to 4-3 in the circle. Reigning CACC Rookie of the Week,
Mikayla Gilgert (3-1), experienced her first setback as a collegian as the Queen Creek, Ariz. native permitted the game's three runs on seven hits and a walk (2 K) over five innings.
A
Lauren Washburn (So.-Carmichael, Calif.) two-run homer, followed by a solo shot from
Bailey Cain (Fr.-Wellington, Fla.) two batters later, accounted for the Hawks' runs.
Kendalia Turner's bunt single in the bottom of the third was all the Lions' lineup could muster in the defeat.
GCU (8-3) returns to action Wednesday with ballgames vs. Edinboro University (11:30 a.m.) and LIU Post (1:45 p.m.).
