#21 Georgian Court Outlasts Jefferson to Take Twin-Bill ... Lions Eclipse 40-win Plateau

Philadelphia, Pa. - #21 Georgian Court University continues to fill the win column as the first-place Lions added another pair of W's Wednesday afternoon with a two-game sweep of host-Jefferson, improving to 22-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action.

The victories push GCU's record to an astounding 41-9 on the year, eclipsing the 2009 squad's mark of 40-17 for the most triumphs by the team in its NCAA Division II history (since 2004). The '09 Lions advanced to within one game of an appearance in the NCAA Division II World Series, falling to Le Moyne College, two-games-to-one, in the Super Regionals.

Having not taken the field since last Thursday at Queens College, the Lions looked fresh, opening Wednesday's first game by plating six runs in the top of the first. GCU added another three tallies in the second to extend its lead to 9-2 after one-and-a-half, before the Rams added two more runs of its own to make the score 9-4 Lions.

Another four-spot in the bottom of the fourth sliced the Jefferson deficit to 9-8 before super-rookie, Mikayla Gilgert, came on to shut down the Rams with 3.1 innings of one-hit relief to earn the freshman her CACC-leading fifth save of the season (3 K).

Bobbie Beck (5-1) registered the victory out of the Lions' bullpen (2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R 4 ER, BB, K) while starting pitcher, Jessica O'Neil, received the no-decision (1.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER).

Samantha Reilly (1-for-3, 2 R) slammed her conference-best 14th home run of the year, a two-run shot, to kick off the offense in the first while Samantha Salomon (3-for-4) and Breanna Keelan (2-for-3, 2 RBI) added run-inducing base hits. Marissa Trezza (1-for-2, 2 R) clubbed a three-run shot (13th of year) to account for the Lions' trio of tallies in the second frame.

Naomi Stas (Sr.-Tuckerton, N.J.) went the distance for Jefferson in the setback (7.0 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), falling to 4-11 on the season with the loss.

After eight scoreless innings to start the nightcap, Georgian Court pushed across a pair in the top of the ninth in a complete contrast of the opening contest. The Rams (15-22, 10-11) added one of their one in the bottom of the inning before falling short in the 2-1 extra-inning affair.

Gilgert, coming off her game-saving effort in the opener, went all the way for the victory in game two, improving her record to a team-best 16-4 (9.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Jefferson ace, Stephanie Pepper (Sr.-Toms River, N.J.) went all nine frames (9.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 ER, BB, 9 K), slipping to 10-7 overall in the process.

Trezza (2-for-4) snapped the scoreless stalemate in the top of the ninth with a ribbie single while an RBI line out by Haley Jones accounted for the Lions' second run. Eryka Springer also went 2-for-4 in the game two triumph.

Georgian Court now returns home to close out the regular season with a Saturday twin-bill vs. Dominican College. The Lions will honor its senior class in a special pregame ceremony prior to the scheduled 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
