Old Westbury, N.Y. - Trailing by only three goals (10-7) late in the third period, Georgian Court University held on vs. #18 New York Tech most of the afternoon. The Bears proceeded to blast five unanswered tallies and run away with an eventual 14-8 home win over the Lions Tuesday in NCAA Division II non-conference men's lacrosse action.
New York Tech opened the contest by netting five of the game's first six scores to take a 5-1 lead after the initial frame. GCU countered with a 4-1 run of its own in the second to climb to within in one (6-5) heading into intermission.
The Bears (2-0) opened the third stanza with four-straight to increase their lead to 10-5 at the 8:41 mark.
Daniel Burnham (5:26) and
Randy Collins (3:22) each sent in a
Tanner Lee helper to inch to within three goals of New York Tech. A subsequent 4-0 barrage by the home team followed to provide Tech an insurmountable 14-7 lead with only 1:38 remaining in regulation.
Matt Murphy (Gr.-Shirley, N.Y.) captained the Bears' offense with his three goals and three assists in the win.
Lenny Innamorato (Jr.-West Babylon, N.Y.) also contributed a hat trick for the Bears.Â
Burnham countered with a hat trick of his own for Georgian Court.
Randy Collins followed with two tallies in the effort while Lee dished a goal and three assists. Despite the result, the Lions out-shot its host, 44-36. Tech, however, owned a 27-22 shots-on-goal advantage.
Brendan Watt (Fr.-Babylon, N.Y.), with his 14 saves, earned the complete-game goalkeeping win for the Bears.
Austin Geissel (0-2) registered 13 saves of his own in the complete-game setback.
GCU (0-2) returns to campus to make its 2020 home debut this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference showdown vs. Southern New Hampshire University.
