Bloomfield, N.J. - Georgian Court University secured its third consecutive triumph Saturday afternoon as the Lions managed Bloomfield College on the road, 75-64, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball action.
After edging the Bears by one (16-15) in the first quarter of play, GCU outscored the home team by a 14-8 count in the second to carry a 30-23 cushion into the halftime break. The Georgian Court surplus increased to game-high 17 points (56-39) with 1:37 left in the third (thanks to a
Safiyyah Lee layup) as the Lions exploded for 29 points in the frame.
Despite being outscored by an 18-17 margin in the fourth-and-final period, Georgian Court's lead was never truly threatened as the Lions' advantage never dipped below eight points at any time during the remaining 10:00 of regulation.
Jada Atchison never left the floor as the graduate student topped all scorers with 24 points (including four three-pointers) in 40 minutes of action for the victors. Lee logged 31 minutes off the Georgian Court bench, collecting 19 points, eight boards, and a trio of assists and steals.
Savawn Hughes added 10 points of her own in the key conference win.
Siani Smith (So.-Burlington, N.J.) and
Jaylah Bennett (So.-Newark, N.J.) paced the Bloomfield (4-19, 3-11 CACC) offense with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
GCU (7-13, 5-8 CACC) returns home for its next outing as the Lions host first-place USciences (20-3, 13-1 CACC) Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
