Winter Haven, Fla. - After winning its first two outings Saturday, the Georgian Court University softball squad found itself on the losing end of a pair of contests Sunday as the Lions dropped decisions to Gannon University (8-1) and Concordia-St. Paul (8-2) on day two of the 2020 Spring Games.
Mikayla Gilgert (1-4), coming off her six-inning no-hitter the day before vs. Tiffin University, got the start vs. Gannon and collected three hitless innings to extend her streak to nine-straight hit-free frames. That came to an abrupt halt in the fourth as the Golden Knights (2-4) unloaded for seven runs on five hits (including three home runs) to take a commanding 7-0 lead and chase the Lions' ace.
GCU mustered its lone tally in the home half of the fifth as a
Malaya Black double to left-center brought around a pinch-running
Caitlyn Hughes all the way from first base.
Lindsey Fischbach, the Lions' top hitter thus far (.406 BA), recorded two of the team's four total hits in the game.
Things would not get better for the royal-and-gold in the nightcap vs. Concordia-St. Paul. The Lions did take an initial 1-0 lead in the top of the third, courtesy of a ribbie single by Fischbach, before the Golden Bears (6-5) exploded for its eight tallies over the next three frames (including five in the sixth) to do in the Lions.
Samantha Fohrman (2-2), facing a squad from her native Minnesota, suffered the setback for GCU (5.0 IP, 7 H, 7R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 5 K).
Georgian Court (3-7) enjoys an off day on Monday before returning to action Tuesday morning with games vs. Saginaw Valley State University (9:00 a.m.) and the University of Charleston (11:15 p.m.).
