How Sweep It Is! Georgian Court Softball Takes Pair From Visiting Mercy in Lions' First Home Appearance in 693 Days

Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University, playing on its home diamond for the first time since May 4, 2019, made the most of its first campus appearance in just under 700 days (693) as the host-Lions secured a Saturday softball sweep vs. Mercy College.

Samantha Fohrman pitched lights out in the opener as the sophomore slinger yielded just a pair of singles and a free pass (to go along with 10 strikeouts) in a 4-0, compete-game victory triumph over the Mavericks.

Carleigh Luzzo launched her first home run of the season in the second inning (a solo shot to left) to initiate the Lions' scoring. Adriana Mungo (2-for-3) and Kiara Meikle each provided run-inducing singles in the home half of the fourth frame. The victors plated their fourth-and-final tally in the fifth, courtesy of a costly Mercy miscue.

Mercy clean-up hitter, Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif.), put the home team in an immediate hole to kick off the nightcap as the sophomore crunched a three-run dinger to right-center in the initial inning of action. GCU, proving to be calm and collected, proceeded to bash the Mavericks for five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Georgian Court never looked back as the royal-and-blue plated recorded three more digits in the second, lone runs in the both the third and fourth, and two more in the sixth to earn the club a 12-4, walk-off winner.

Taylor Barraza (2-for-4) ripped a pair of two-baggers in the rout, collecting two ribbies along the way. Mungo authored her second 2-for-3 performance of the afternoon with a double and two runs scored. Alyssa Herrera sizzled a triple in the win, going 2-for-3 with two runs of her own.

Meikle, making the most of her pinch-hitting appearances on the day, laced the game-winning knock (a double to left-center) to bring around Malaya Black and Luzzo with the game-enders. The freshman from Coral Springs, Fla. went 2-for-2 with three RBI in her two pinch-hit efforts.

Mikayla Gilgert, after a bumpy start, bounced back nicely as the junior ace improves to 4-1 in the complete-game showing (6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K).

GCU (7-1), winners of seven-straight, now prepare to host Molloy College Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.(D.H.) in a make-up of a March 21 postponement. Follow the action LIVE with Andrew Bern on the CACC Network!
