Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University finds itself one win away from its first softball championship in 12 years as the top-seeded Lions shut out #5 Post University, 8-0, to advance to Wednesday's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) title game vs. #7 Bloomfield College. The Bears advance after upsetting #3 Wilmington University, 8-1, on the road earlier in the day.
With Tuesday's six-inning dismissal of the Eagles, the #24 team in the nation moves to 30 games over .500 with a record of 34-4. The triumph marks the victor's 16th "mercy rule"Â win of the season. Post ends the campaign at 19-10 overall.
Four runs in the bottom of the second, and four more in the six, did the trick for the Lions as Georgian Court pitching not only picked up its 12th shutout of the year, but also its second-straight one-hitter (fifth-overall).
Malia Black played a vital role in extending these numbers as the GCU left-fielder scaled high above the fence to rob Post's
Courtney Brobst (Fr.-Townsend, Del.) of a two-run homer in the third.Â
Mikayla Gilgert (17-2) earned the win out of the bullpen with three innings of perfect softball (4 K). The junior relieved starting pitcher,
Samantha Fohrman, who yielded the lone Post hit and four walks (4 K) in three-plus innings of action to start the contest.
Malaya Black (RBI double),
Malia Black (two-run single), and
Adriana Mungo (RBI single) accounted for the four Georgian Court RBI's in the second frame while another Mungo run-scoring single and a two-run, walk-off double from
Taylor Barraza highlighted the Lions' sixth-and-final at-bat.
The Lions now look ahead to hosting Bloomfield College (12-18-1) at 3pm Wednesday. Georgian Court kept the Bears scoreless, 5-0 and 8-0 (6 inn.), in a home CACC doubleheader sweep back on April 17.
