Lakewood, N.J. - After limping to the end of the 2021 regular season last weekend, Georgian Court University fired on all cylinders Tuesday as the two-time reigning CACC champions (playing as the #3 seed) took care of business vs. #6 Post University, 20-8, in the opening round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
The victory sets up a highly-anticipated rematch with #2 Wilmington University Thursday (2:30 p.m.) in Newark, Del. after the Wildcats upended the Lions for the first time in the history of the rivalry, 13-7, last Tuesday (4/27) at Georgian Court.Â
GCU (8-4) attacked right out of the gate, peppering Post for nine first-half goals as the Lions strolled into intermission with a hearty halftime lead of 9-2. The Eagles (0-8) responded by netting three of the third period's first five goals to make the score 11-5 Lions with 6:32 remaining in the frame. Georgian Court put an end to any further Post comeback attempts by pouring in the next four tallies, and nine of the game's next 11, to create an insurmountable 20-7 surplus.
Nine different Lions collected goals in the playoff rout, topped by
Michael Ventresca and his four scoring efforts.
P.J. Saracino paced the squad with his six points, which included three goals and three assists.
Randy Collins contributed a hat trick and a helper while
Tanner Lee,
Devin Bell,
Daniel Burnham, and
Tallen Smith each totaled two goals and a pair of assists.Â
Vaughn Meehan dominated at the face off, winning 18 of his 26 attempts in the circle, while scooping a game-high 10 ground balls and recording his first-career goal in the triumph.
Austin Geissel, crowned the CACC Goalkeeper of the Year for the third time in his illustrious collegiate career earlier in the day, collected the win with 12 saves in 56 total minutes of work.
