Holy Family Slips By Lions in Overtime

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Nov. 30, 2022) - The CACC opener came with high drama and 40 minutes just wasn't enough to determine a winner between Georgian Court Women's Basketball and Holy Family. In the end, Holy Family outscored the Lions 11-6 in the extra period for a 76-71 win.

How it Happened
• It was a back-and-forth affair all night with 15 ties and 15 lead changes. Neither team led by more than nine points at any point in the game.
• Holy Family shot 40.3% overall and GCU was at 39.7%. The Lions were 8-18 from three but the Tigers hit eight as well on 21 attempts. Georgian Court sunk 13-of-18 free throws and the Tigers struggled at the line going just 14-for-25.
• The Tigers took advantage of the Lions on the glass. They outrebounded GCU 53-34, 25 on the offensive boards.
• Each team had trouble holding onto the ball. The Lions turned it over 18 times and Tigers 19.
• Georgian Court started the game white hot from behind the arc. Precious Adediran hit two in the first minute and Tian Addison added another two possessions later. Holy Family responded and a 6-0 run gave them an 11-9 lead.
• An answer quickly came from Adediran who sunk her third three of the quarter putting GCU back out in front. As they've done so often already this season, GCU hit another buzzer beater on the final play of the quarter. Tied at 16, Erika Aspajo came down with a rebound and ran the length of the floor, splitting a pair of defenders and putting in a layup as the quarter ended with the Lions ahead 18-16.
• Holy Family took the lead right back with a three to start the second quarter and neither team held more than a three-point lead at any point in the second. Every time one team scored to take the lead, the other seemingly had an answer. With GCU down 30-28 in the closing seconds, Savawn Hughes grabbed an offensive rebound and gave the Lions another buzzer beater putting back a layup as the horn sounded to tie the game at 30 at intermission.
• The Lions started to pull away in the third taking a seven point lead after Adediran added three more. This time it wasn't on a field goal though, she was fouled on her three-point attempt and made all three free throws to put GCU up 40-33.
• Leading by four, Hughes with a pull up jumper and Aspajo a three at the 3:21 mark gave the Lions their largest lead, 47-38. But it quickly disappeared as Holy Family outscored the Lions 12-2 the rest of the quarter and led by one, 50-49, heading to the fourth.
• Back-to-back layups from Aspajo tied the game at 53 midway through the fourth. GCU grabbed the lead helped out by going 4-6 at the foul line in the quarter. After an Imani Gillette layup, the Lions led by four, 63-59, with just 1:15 left in regulation. A foul and two free throws made it a two-point game then a Lion turnover and Tiger bucket from Lindsay Tretter tied the game at 63 with just 25 seconds left.
• GCU took the lead on an Imani Gillette layup. Holy Family used a timeout to advance the ball and this time it was their turn to beat the buzzer. Skyler Searfoss found Carolyn Prevost who hit the game-tying layup to force overtime.
• In the extra period, HFU scored the first four points, but GCU came back to take a 70-69 lead following a Hughes layup. Holy Family answered with a layup of their own and GCU went 0-4 from the field the final 1:15 with a turnover and the Tigers made five free throws to hold off the Lions.

It Was Over When...
• GCU was down to their last bit of hope when the Tigers made it a four-point game at the foul line with 12 seconds left in overtime.. Erika Aspajo missed a three though and there just wasn't enough time for GCU to make a miraculous comeback.
