Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University continues a sizzling streak of winning basketball as the Lions coasted to an 87-53 home win vs. Nyack College Thursday night. Possessing a season-best, five-game winning streak, and moving to 8-7 (11-11 overall) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition, GCU has jumped Holy Family University for the fourth-and-final playoff spot in the women's basketball south division standings.
HFU, which has one game in hand with 14 total conference contests, next takes the floor Saturday at University of Sciences.
The royal-and-blue never trailed in the rout, leading by 17 at intermission (41-24), and increasing its surplus to a balloon-like 35 points after a successful
Hanna Thrainsdottir jumper made the the score 87-52 home team with 3:19 remaining in regulation. GCU shot a scorching 50.6% from the floor (39-for-77) while the Warriors hit on only 18 field-goal attempts (18-for-67, 26.9%).
Georgian Court completely bullied Nyack on the glass, grabbing 61 total boards (19 ORB, 42 DRB) compared to the Warriors' 28 rebounds (9 ORB, 19 DRB).
Nerea Brajac highlighted the Lions' offensive ledger with her first double-double of the season as the graduate student drained 14 points, to go along with a game-high 13 assists, over 32 minutes of action.
Anyssa Fields shot 9-of-18 from the floor, leading all scorers with 20 points (nine rebounds). The aforementioned Thrainsdottir hit for 12 points in 17 minutes off the GCU bench,
Erika Aspajo continues to dish dimes as the freshman distributed 11 helpers to complement her seven points.
Leighanna Lister fell just short of a double-double with a nine points and a game-best 16 rebounds.
Ivona Krakic added 10 rebounds and added four blocks for the Lions.
Carly Bolivar (Jr.-Elmont, N.Y.) topped Nyack with her 14 points, seven boards, and three blocks.
Amani Levitan (So.-Bloomfield, Conn.) and
Sarah Wilson (Sr.-New Hope Pa.) followed with 12 points apiece.
Georgian Court now looks to Saturday as the Lions host Jefferson (19-6, 11-4 CACC) at a special 3:30 p.m. start time. GCU goes for the divisional season-sweep having already upended the Rams, (64-61) back on Jan. 5 in Philadelphia.
