Georgian Court, Kutztown Split Pair of One-Run Decisions ... Stufft Slams Another Pair for GCU

Kutztown, Pa. - In a twin-bill originally scheduled for this coming Monday, Georgian Court University and Kutztown University hooked up for a pair in the Keystone State as the Lions and Golden Bears each secured a one-run win Friday afternoon in non-conference softball action.

GCU (13-9), behind a two-run homer off the bat of the red-hot Kaitlyn Stufft (and accompanied by a complete-game effort in the circle by Mikayla Gilgert), secured a slim 2-1 triumph in the opener. Kutztown salvaged a 3-2 victory in the nightcap to move to 14-8 on the year.

Stufft, coming into the contest with a team-best six dingers, launched #7 in the top of the first to put the Lions up, 2-0. KU's Hannah Reimel (So.-Warminster, Pa.) countered with a solo shot in the home half of the fifth to move the home team to within one. Gilgert proceeded to sit down nine of the next 10 Kutztown hitters (walk) as the Georgian Court ace improves to 9-4 on the season (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K).

The Lions' ferocious clean-up hitter went boom again to start game two and provide the visitors an immediate 1-0 cushion in the initial frame. The sophomore slugger out of Temecula, Calif. closes out the double-dip with a hefty .418 batting average, to go along with eight home runs and 31 ribbies, in just 22 contests.

A Kutztown sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third, followed by a ribbie double and a run-inducing ground out in the fifth, placed the Golden Bears atop its guest, 3-1. The Lions countered with an Adriana Mungo sac fly in the sixth to slice the deficit to one, but that would be as close as the royal-and-gold would get.

Amber Brugger (Sr.-Levittown, Pa.) garnered the pitching victory for Kutztown (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Freshman hurler, Haley Korsak (0-2), making her third start for the Lions, took the defeat (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 K).

GCU returns to action Sunday morning with an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader vs. Felician University in CACC action.
