Lakewood, N.J. -
Haley Korsak fired her first complete-game effort as a collegiate hurler as the freshman went the distance in a 6-2 game two victory Tuesday vs. Goldey-Beacom College. The win capped a two-game sweep of the Lightning as Georgian Court University moves to 14-0 (25-9) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action.
Trailing by score of 3-2 late in the opener, GCU wielded a seven-run hammer in the home half of the sixth en route to a hard-fought 9-4 win. An
Alyssa Herrera sacrifice fly put the home team ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the third before a
Chrissy Jordan (Sr.-Pasadena, Md.) three-run shot over the right field fence provided GBC a dramatic 3-1 surplus in the top of the fourth.
Unable to get its offense going through most of the contest,
Alyssa Rue crunched her eighth homer of the year in the bottom of the fourth, before the Lions unlocked its arsenal in the sixth, plating seven runs on four hits and pair of GBC miscues. The big blow came courtesy of
Kaitlyn Stufft as the sophomore slugger launched her first-career grand slam, a mighty shot to right-center.
The Georgian Court dugout held its collective breath in the top of the third as ace hurler,
Mikayla Gilgert, left the game after laying out to catch a
Carly Setting (Jr.-Middletown, Del.) bunt.
Sarah Clancy (3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K) went the next one-and-two-thirds out of the Lions' pen before Gilgert (5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 4 K) made a dramatic return to the circle in the sixth to finish what she started and earn the victory (16-4). Â
Morgan McLane (Fr.-Clayton, Del.) slips to 5-4 on the year with the tough-luck loss (5.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 5 K).
Carrying a 6-0 cushion into the seventh-and-final stanza, Korsak would yield a two-out, two-run single to
Bianca Newsom (Jr.-Edison, N.J.) to lose the shutout bid. The native of Egg Harbor Twp., N.J. would have to settle for her second win of the year (2-2), scattering seven hits and a walk (2 K).
The Lions, winners of a season-high 12-consecutive outings, hits the road Thursday as the royal-and-gold visits perennial CACC rival, Wilmington University, for a 2:30 p.m. twin-bill in New Castle, Del.
