Lakewood, N.J. - #3 Georgian Court University and #2 Chestnut Hill College added yet another chapter to its heated rivalry Thursday as the foes faced off in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference postseason for the third year, this time in the 2022 CACC Semifinals (hosted by GCU).
After falling to the Lions in both the 2018 and 2019 title games, the Griffins achieved redemption on this day as CHC collected a 17-15 victory in back-and-forth fashion to earn the program's third trip to the CACC Championship Game. They will take on #1 Wilmington University, which dismissed #4 Dominican College by a score of 24-8 in the day's first semifinal showdown.
Trailing by a 4-3 count after the initial period of play, Georgian Court ripped four unanswered tallies to open the second frame, creating a three-goal cushion for the Lions at the 11:22 mark. Not to be outdone, the Griffins bounced back with a 5-1 spurt of its own to inch back ahead by one, 9-8, with 5:17 to go before intermission. Scores by
Daniel Burnham and
Devin Bell over the final 2:52 of the quarter allowed the Lions to quickly grab the lead back (10-9) right before the break.
After a Bell equalizer knotted the score at 13-13 with 6:07 to go in the third, Chestnut Hill proceeded to rack up a 4-1 counterattack as the Griffins gathered a mighty 17-14 advantage with only 5:49 to go in regulation.
J.R. Howell (Sr.-East Meadow, N.Y.) and
Ben Revak (Gr.-Aston, Pa.) combined for 18 total points for the victors, collecting five goals and four helpers apiece.
Liam McCann (Fr.-Alberta, Canada) added a hat trick and a pair of assists.
Burnham (two goals, five assists) and
Tallen Smith (five goals, two assists) contributed a team-best seven points for the Lions in the setback. Bell blasted home six tallies.
Michael Ventresca added a pair of goals. Chestnut Hill out-shot GCU, 51-36 (33-28 on frame).
Both goalkeepers turned in gems in the contest.
Andrew Candino pocketed 16 saves in the complete-game performance for Georgian Court.
Austin Jones (Jr.-Courtice, Ontario) compiled 13 saves of his own to earn the win.
Georgian Court closes the campaign with a 6-11 overall mark. CHC moves to 10-6.
