Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's lacrosse program added another year to its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship-winning dynasty as the Lions secured their unprecedented fifth-consecutive CACC crown Saturday with an epic 17-16 victory over #3 Dominican College.
In a back-and-forth classic, the Lady Chargers (14-5) owned a 10-7 surplus at the 6:38 mark of the second quarter. Aware of the urgency, the Lions' offense lit up the Dominican net with three unanswered tallies in a span of 1:33 to create a 10-10 halftime stalemate. DC accounted for three of the second stanza's first five scores to jump out to a slight 13-12 lead with 2:59 to go in the third. Georgian Court responded by slinging in the contest's next three markers to go ahead, 15-13, with only 13:40 left in regulation.
Owning a 17-14 advantage with 10:37 left, and with the finish line in sight, GCU did all it could to keep the Chargers from crashing its fifth-straight CACC celebration. Dominican attempted to sour the scene as DC's
Grace DeStasio (3:54) and
Ellie Brower (1:54) ripped unassisted scores to slice its deficit to what would be the final score.
Heather Devaney, the 2022 CACC Championship Tournament MVP, authored a sensational stat line consisting of eight points (seven goals, assist), four ground balls, and a pair of clutch caused turnovers.
Riley O'Connor (four goals),
Shaine Sauter (three goals, assist), and
Isabel Raimondi (two goals, two assists) added four points apiece.
Sabrina Chandler (two assists) dominated with an incredible 17 draw controls in the victory.
The aforementioned DeStasio (five goals, two assists) and Erica Ortiz (six goals, assist) paced the Dominican offense with seven points each.Â
Kristinamarie Kaszovitz, the CACC Goalkeeper of the Year, proved her worth with a stellar 18 saves for DC in the setback.
Alexis Hahn recorded five saves in the championship victory. Hahn, Devaney, Sauter, O'Connor, Chandler, and
Jessica Rogers each earned All-Tournament honors.
Georgian Court (12-7) extends its winning streak (including postseason) to 53-straight vs. conference foes. The Lions close the campaign on a 10-game overall winning streak.
