Lakewood, N.J. - Three Wilmington University runs in the bottom of the fifth inning snapped a 1-1 stalemate and, ultimately, clinch a 4-1 victory over Georgian Court as the Wildcats collect their first-ever NCAA Division II Softball East 2 Regional title.
Sunday's win advances #3 WU to the Super Regional round next week vs. #1 Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. The Panthers secured the East 1 Regional crown Saturday with a come-from-behind, 4-3 defeat of #4 Caldwell University. The #2-seed Lions, the two-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) champions, end their their season in the NCAA regionals for the third-consecutive campaign. GCU with a final record of 40-15, earns its third 40-win season (2009, 2019) as an NCAA Division II program.
After rapping nine hits in a 9-1, six-inning win over #6 Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, the royal-and-gold could only muster a pair of knocks in its outing vs. Wilmington, compared to 12 hits for the Wildcats. In five outings vs. its conference rival this season, GCU went 1-4 overall.
