Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lions Win On Another Final Minute Three

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Jan. 14, 2023) - For the second consecutive game, Georgian Court Women's Basketball went down to the wire and buried a three-pointer in the closing minute to take a late lead. Tuesday night it was Savawn Hughes who made the game winner, this time it was Paula Perez-Fabregas who's three-pointer with 23 seconds left to play was the difference in a 67-66 win over Caldwell.

How it Happened
• The Lions and Cougars were well matched in an even game. GCU shot 39% overall and the Cougars 37%. The Lions were 6-16 from three and Caldwell sunk 7-23.
• Throughout the 40 minutes of action, the game saw 16 lead changes and 13 ties.
• Rebounding numbers favored the Cougars 45-43. They pulled down one more offensive board, 16-15, but GCU scored 12 second-chance points to Caldwell's six.
• Georgian Court had one of their best games holding onto the ball. They turned it over just 10 times and forced 13.
• The Lions passing was also very crisp as they dished out 22 assists on 27 made field goals.
• As they've often done, Georgian Court took an early lead, going up 6-2 in the first two and a half minutes. Caldwell then scored the next six and that set the pace for the back-and-forth affair.
• In the closing seconds of the quarter, Perez-Fabregas hit a corner three with just five seconds to play and it looked like GCU would be up after 10 minutes. Halle Brown had other ideas though as she went off the glass and in from half court to beat the buzzer and tie things up at 16.
• Caldwell started to pull away in the second quarter. With GCU ahead 24-23, the Cougars went on a 14-4 run over 6:07 and took their largest lead, 37-36, with 1:22 remaining in the half. A'nya Harper though made back-to-back layups to finish off the quarter and at intermission, the Cougars led by seven, 37-30.
• The Cougars were up eight, 46-38, when the Lions mounted their comeback. In just 3:06 of game play, the Lions closed the gap with an 8-0 run. Hayleigh Lagase made it a one-point game and Harper tied it up at the free throw line.
• With just over one minute to play in the period, Perez-Fagregas made another three to put the Lions up 51-50. It looked like that score might hold, but the Cougars again beat the buzzer. This time it was Amyah Bray connecting from downtown and got a foul call. She hit the and-one for the four-point play and Caldwell was up 54-51 with one quarter left.
• It took Tian Addison just 37 seconds to get the lead back for the Lions. She started the fourth with a floater, then connected from three for a 56-54 Lion lead.
• After Caldwell's three, neither team led by more than two the rest of the way. The fourth quarter alone saw seven different lead changes.
• With the game tied at 64, Jessica Wagoner untied it with a layup with 46 seconds to put Caldwell back up two. Perez-Fabregas then found the answer hitting her fourth and final three-pointer of the game, putting the Lions back up 67-66.
• The game wasn't finished though with 23 seconds left to play. Caldwell had two looks, a layup and a three-pointer and missed on both. Georgian Court got the ball back with a little over three seconds remaining. Caldwell needed to foul to have any hopes, but still needed to commit four more just to send GCU to the line. By the time they committed three, GCU was able to run out the clock on the 67-66 win.
