JERSEY CITY, NJ (Jan. 8, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball played for the first time in 2023 and in ways it looks much like a game from the 2022 calendar year. The Lions were holding their own through the first 10 minutes, but the wheels fell off in the second quarter of their 60-41 loss at Alliance. GCU outscored Alliance 24-20 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to mount any sort of comeback.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court struggled shooting the ball, connecting at just 28.6% and were 4-17 from three. Alliance didn't shoot the lights out, but performed better hitting at 35.3% and were 5-15 from downtown.
• The Lions had too many miscues turning the ball over 24 times and committing 23 fouls. Alliance turned those turnovers into 27 points.
• Rebounding numbers were even. Alliance held a slight lead, 35-34 and 9-8 in offensive rebounds. Alliance scored 11 second-chance points while GCU was unable to score off of their eight offensive boards.
• The game went scoreless until
Paula Perez-Fabregas made a three at the 6:15 mark of the quarter. Alliance responded scoring the next seven for a 7-3 lead midway through the first.
•
Jariah Patterson with three the hard way and
Leah Snisky off the bench for a jumper put GCU back in front, 8-7, with four minutes left to play.Â
• Alliance retook the lead, 13-10, in the closing minutes of the first. Perez-Fabregas was there for the answer, her second three of the game and the game was tied at 13 after the first quarter.Â
• Tied at 15 is when Alliance took control of the game. They went on a 15-0 run going 5-6 from the floor to take a 30-15 lead. The Lions were 0-4 with three turnovers in the 3:46 stretch.
• Georgian Court couldn't get anything going offensively in the second as they were outscored 27-4 for the period. After putting a stop to the 15-0 run, Alliance finished the half outscoring GCU 10-0 in the final 2:42 going 3-3 from the floor and 4-4 at the free throw line.
• Even though Alliance couldn't keep up the 69% shooting from the second quarter, Georgian Court was unable to chip into the Alliance lead. The Lions held Alliance to just nine in the third and 11 in the fourth, but only put up 24 themselves and never threatened to claim the lead.
It Was Over When...
• The Lions needed a big response coming out to start the third, but it wasn't there. The Lions didn't make a field goal until the 5:20 mark in the third and Alliance was able to run the clock down until it ultimately expired.
