Four Lions in Double-Figures Not Enough in Loss to Saint Anselm

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Nov. 12, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball started their season in New Haven, Conn. against a pair of Northeast-10 teams. Despite four scoring 10+ points Sunday afternoon, the Lions still fell to Saint Anselm 73-60 and move to 0-2 to start the season.

How it Happened
• Three-point shooting was a problem for Georgian Court. Offensively, they shot just 1-14 from behind the arc while defensively, they gave up eight on 16 attempts.
• For the game, GCU shot 43% while Saint Anselm was at 47%.
• Most of the Lions scoring was down in the paint. They scored 42 in the painted area.
• GCU nearly turned the ball over 20 times, losing 19 times. The Hawks turned it over 14 times. Saint Anselm also scored 20 points of the GCU turnovers.
• Georgian Court did a better job getting to the foul line. They were 11-15 for the game while Saint Anselm was 13-20 at the stripe.
• Rebounding numbers were nearly even. Georgian Court grabbed 32 and the Hawks 29. The Lions scored nine second-chance points helped out by 10 offensive rebounds.
1st Quarter
• The two teams were going back-and-forth at the start. Tied up at 12, GCU closed the period on a 6-1 run.
• Erika Aspajo made a pair of free throws while Imani Gilletti and Safiatu Kolliegbo each made layups.
2nd Quarter
• The Lions lead didn't last long into the second. The Hawks started the period on a 10-4 run to take a 23-22 lead.
• A three-pointer from Kolliegbo with less than five to play made it a 28-27 Lion lead.
• Aspajo made two more at the line with less than a minute to play to keep the GCU lead at one.
• At the buzzer though, Tatum Forbes' three-pointer was true and the Hawks were up two, 36-34 at the break.
3rd Quarter
• GCU hung around for the start of the second half, but midway through, Saint Anselm took over.
• The Hawks scored eight straight to open up their largest lead, 50-41.
• Aspajo made a field goal in the final minute and going to the fourth, GCU trailed 52-45.
4th Quarter
• It was still a seven-point game with 7:26 to play, but the Hawks scored seven straight in 1:22 pushing the lead to 14.
• The Hawks led the rest of the way going on to a 73-60 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Safiatu Kolliegbo led four Lions in double-figures with 19 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds and passed out five assists.
• Erika Aspajo scored 12 going 4-4 at the line with six boards and three helpers.
• Karissa Smedly and Marta Guilera each scored 10.
• Imani Gillette was 3-3 from the floor for six points.

For the Hawks
• Tatum Forbes led all scorers with 21 points.
• Liv Robles added 15.
• Katie Lemanski scored 14.

News and Notes
• This is the first meeting between the Lions and Hawks in 10 years. GCU falls to 0-2 against Saint Anselm all-time.
• The Lions came up with 11 steals. Eight more than in their season opener.

• Georgian Court is on the road this Wednesday against Kutztown with a 6 p.m. tip off.
