LAKEWOOD, NJ (Dec. 19, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball had a tall task as they finished off their fall semester slate of games. The Lions welcomed No. 25 Assumption and the number six defense in the country to Lakewood. Assumption got on top early, and while the Lions fought hard, the Greyhounds came away with a 73-47 win.
How it Happened
• While Assumption shot 56% from the floor, GCU was just 19-59 hitting at 32%. Neither team made or attempted many from behind the arc. The Lions were 1-7 and the Greyhounds 4-13.
• Each team turned the ball over 21 times. Georgian Court forced a lot of those with 15 steals.
• Assumption won the battle on the glass 35-25, but the Lions were up 11-5 in offensive rebounds.
• GCU committed 15 fouls and the Greyhounds shot 13-16 at the foul line while the Lions made 8-11 with Assumption called for 10 fouls.
1st Quarter
• The game started with an administrative technical foul as the backboard LED lights on one end were not functioning. Assumption put Molly Stokes on the line for one free though and before the opening tip, GCU was down 1-0.Â
• Assumption made their first two field goal attempts and were off an running.Â
• The Greyhounds led 9-2, but the Lions went on a 6-2 spurt with layups from
Jessenia Edwards,
Niyell McCargo and
Marta Guilera to close the gap to three with under four to play in the opening frame.
• Assumption's lead was still three with 90 seconds to play. The Greyhounds finished the quarter with a pair of buckets to turn the three-point lead into a seven-point lead at the end of the first, 19-12.
2nd Quarter
• The beginning of the second quarter is where Assumption really pulled away.
• Edwards hit a jumper to start the quarter, then it was 19 straight Greyhound points as they extended their lead to 24, 38-14.
• Assumption was 7-9 during the run while the Lions were 0-6 with five turnovers.
• McCargo stopped a 5:40 scoreless drought with a bucket and over the final 4:12, GCU outscored the Greyhounds 9-4 and trailed at the half 42-23.
3rd Quarter
• Both offenses were slow coming out of the break. Assumption scored 14 going 5-14 from the floor while the Lions were just 2-13 and scored seven in the quarter.
• Despite Assumption's poor shooting, they were still able to extend their lead.
• A three-ball from Amanda Mieczkowski gave the Greyhounds their largest lead, 54-26 midway through the quarter and the teams traded points the rest of the way.
4th Quarter
• Assumption started the fourth quarter off hot though, opening on a 16-4.
• The Greyhounds were 6-9 and took their largest lead of the game, 72-34.
• Credit Georgian Court though for playing to the end. Over the final 3:58 of the game, GCU outscored the Greyhounds 13-1.

Julia Whesper scored all nine of her points in that final 3:58 and GCU was 6-6 from the floor with three steals.
• In a 58 second span, Whesper scored seven points going 3-3 with a three-pointer and a steal.
• Time ran out on the Lions though with Assumption leaving town with the 73-47 win.
Lion Stat Leaders

Niyell McCargo led GCU scoring 13 on 6-15 shooting with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Julia Whesper scored nine on 4-of-5 shooting.

Marta Guilera added eight points and four boards.
•
Jada Jacobs filled out the stat sheet with four points, six rebounds, six steals, two assists and a blocked shot.
For the Greyhounds
• Molly Stokes led all scorers with 22 points. She was 7-12 from the floor and 6-6 at the line.
• Amanda Mieczkowski was 6-7 for 13 points with four rebounds.
• Marina Callahan was also in double-figures with 12 points and six rebounds.
