Lions Advance to Sub-Regional Final

WILMINGTON, Del. (May 12, 2023) - Georgian Court Softball will once again play for a chance to go the NCAA Super Regionals. While the Lions dropped their first game, 5-0, against Wilmington, the Lions won an elimination game later in the day, 5-1, over Pace to advance to the NCAA sub-regional final. 

Game 2 - Georgian Court 5, Pace 1
How it Happened

• Georgian Court scattered nine hits in game two with two doubles. Pace managed just five singles, scoring one run.
• Both teams had chances to add more runs with GCU leaving seven on base and Pace six.
• The Lions scored in the first inning as Adriana Mungo and Kaitlyn Stufft picked up back-to-back hits. 
• Pace responded right away tying the game in the second. A bases loaded ground ball brought in a run to tie the game.
• Georgian Court broke it open in the third with four runs on three hits. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brittany Gable was hit by a pitch to give the Lions the lead. Coco Dunham then cleared the bases with a deep fly over the center fielder's head that fell in for a double.
• The Setters managed just two hits the rest of the way off of Jackie Cherry and the Lions staved off elimination to advance to the final day Saturday morning. 

Lions Stat Leaders
Jackie Cherry gave Georgian Court seven strong innings allowing just five hits and one run.
Taylor Barraza was 2-2 with a walk.
Coco Dunham had the games biggest hit, a three RBI double.
Adriana Mungo was 3-4 with a double and two singles.
Brittany Gable had a hit, run and an RBI.

For the Setters
• Acevedo gave up five runs in six innings on nine hits.
• Shea was 2-3 with a run scored
• Gorman had the Setters lone RBI.

How it Happened

• The Lions managed just four hits, all singles off of CACC Pitcher of the Year Kylee Gunkel.
• Wilmington collected 10 hits with two doubles. The Wildcats were also helped out by three walks and two hit-by-pitches.
• After a scoreless first, Wilmington got on the board with a run in the second. After a leadoff double, Jess Reed's two-out single scored the first run of the game.
• The Lions tried to rally with two outs in the top of the third. They put two on, but Savannah Simons popped out to end the threat.
• Wilmington added two more in the home half third without the ball leaving the infield. Two infield singles, a walk and a wild pitch gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. 
• A walk and a double started the bottom of the fifth for Wilmington as they continued to tack on. A sacrfice fly made it 5-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
• Gunkel set GCU down in order in the sixth and seventh, setting the Lions up for an elimination game later in the day.

Lions Stat Leaders
Adriana Mungo reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Taylor Barraza was 1-1 with a single and a hit-by-pitch in her two plate appearances.
Taylor Lipkins and Kaitlyn Stufft both singled. 
Camille Dunham pinch ran and stole a base.
Janelle Blaszka started and tossed the first three innings and allowed three runs on five hits.
• Sam Hildebrandt threw the final three giving up two runs on five hits. 

For the Wildcats
• Kylee Gunkel limited the Lions to just four singles and no runs whlie striking out three.
• Hailey Downin was 3-4 with a pair of doubles, RBI and a run scored.
• Sara Miller was also 3-4 with a run scored.
• Jess Reed drove in two runs.

News and Notes
Taylor Lipkins played in her 100th career game.
Jadalynn Rodriguez took her 250th at bat and Kaitlyn Stufft took at bat number 400.
Adriana Mungo played in her 150th game. 
Taylor Barraza has not been retired in Wilmington. She's 5-5 in three games with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, reaching base in seven straight plate appearances. She's got a .588 average and .682 on-base percentage in nine GCU postseason games. 
• Georgian Court falls to 1-5 against Wilmington this season. 
• All-time in the NCAA, Georgian Court is 16-17.
• The Lion now have 39 wins on the season. One more win would match last season's total.

Up Next
• It's a rematch of the CACC Tournament finals with the roles reversed. Georgian Court needs to defeat Wilmington twice tomorrow to advance to the Super Regional. Wilmington needs just one win.
