Chargers Pull Away in Second Half of Win Over Georgian Court

ORANGEBURG, NY (Jan. 14, 2024) - Georgian Court and Dominican were going back-and-forth in a one-point game at halftime, but the Chargers pulled away late, scoring 47 second-half points in an 81-66 win over the Lions. The loss sets the Lions back to 1-12 this season and 1-3 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court finished the game shooting 46% overall with Dominican hitting at a 44% clip.
• The Chargers sunk seven three-pointers while the Lions hit just one, late in the fourth quarter.
• Dominican was helped out going 18-24 at the Line. GCU shot 69% at the stripe, making 11-of-16.
• Georgian Court turned the ball over 25 times and that led to 16 Dominican points.
• The Lions totaled 41 rebounds to Dominican's 29, including 11 on the offensive glass. 
First Quarter
• Dominican took an early lead, but a Niyell McCargo layup evened things at eight-all midway through the frame.
• The Lions grabbed a lead and thanks to an 8-1 run led 12-9.
• The Chargers answered by hitting a pair of three-pointers to go back on top, 15-12. 
• Leah Snisky made a jumper with a minute left to play and after 10 minutes the Lions trailed by one, 15-14.
Second Quarter
• The second quarter was a high-scoring affair as both teams put up 19 points.
• Dominican went up by as much as five, 19-14, in the first minute of the quarter.
• Georgian Court kept pace though and took their first lead since 12-9, 27-26 on a Safiatu Kolliegbo jumper with 3:44 left in the half.
• GCU pushed the lead to three, but Dominican again responded with a three-pointer. 
• With the Lions up by one, Cayla Howard completed made a basket and the foul, putting Dominican up 34-33 at the half.
• In the first 20 minutes, the Lions shot 56% (14-25), but turned the ball over 15 times. That helped Dominican stay the game along with the Chargers five three-pointers.  
Third Quarter
• Just 40 seconds into the half, GCU saw their one-point deficit balloon to five and the Lions needed to call a timeout.
• GCU made a basket to make it a one-possession game once again.
• For most of the third, the game stayed between a three and five point Dominican lead as the two teams traded baskets.
• With the Chargers ahead by four, Cayla Howard gave them their largest lead, 48-41, with another three-point play.
• Dominican started to separate late in the third and ended the frame on a 9-4 run over the final 1:47.
• Howard with another three-point play gave Dominican their first double-digit lead of the game, 55-45 with 53 seconds to play, and that's where the lead stayed heading to the fourth with the Chargers ahead 57-47.
Fourth Quarter
• Georgian Court was able to get back to within seven on a couple of occasions, but that was as close as they made it.
• Dominican used a 12-4 run to build a 15-point lead with two minutes to play and put an end to any possible Lion comeback.
• The Chargers hit a three at the end and the score made the game appear not as close as it was with a final score of 81-66.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Safiatu Kolliegbo scored 18 points going 7-18 overall with seven rebounds.
• Imani Gillette had another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
• Niyell McCargo added 10 with four rebounds and four assists.
• Marta Guilera was 4-7 for 10 points.

For the Chargers
• Cayla Howard led all scorers with 26 points going 8-16 overall and 9-12 at the foul line. She too had a double-double with 10 rebounds.
• Alexis Suarez scored 18.
• Tanasha Mills helped out with 14 and seven assists.
• Angelina DiMarsico scored nine with three three-pointers.

News and Notes
• This is the first time since 2017-18 either team has won back-to-back games in this series.
• Georgian Court is now 16-32 all-time against Dominican and 5-17 on the road. It's their first time playing in Orangeburg since 2020.
• Safiatu Kolliegbo scored her 150th point of the season.
• Imani Gillette has double-figure points in four straight and double-doubles in three of those four games.
• The Lions 66 points match a season-high as was their 49% shooting percentage. It's the third time this season GCU was over 40% shooting.
