NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Nov. 10, 2024) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball wrapped up a busy opening weekend in Connecticut. Just 24 hours after opening day, the Lions were right back on the court against St. Anselm. Georgian Court couldn't hold off a hot-shooting Hawks team and fell 84-46.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court shot the ball better than they did yesterday, connecting on 32% and 3-13 from behind the arc. St. Anselm hit 44% from the field and 39% from distance.
• Rebounding numbers were also closer with the Hawks holding a 44-33 advantage. They grabbed 17 offensive boards though to score 29 second-chance points.
• The Lions cut down on their turnovers, losing the ball 22 times after giving it away 38 yesterday. St. Anselm coughed it up 12 times.
1st Half
• Saint Anselm never trailed and quickly built a 14-2 lead less than five minutes into the game.
• Georgian Court outscored the Hawks 9-6 over the final 4:46 but still trailed by double-digits entering the second quarter.
• Southern Connecticut pulled away yesterday in the second quarter, and that's what happened again Sunday.
• GCU was just 2-11 in the period and outscored by 16.
• The Lions went cold and didn't score in the final 6:18 of the second while the Hawks took a 45-18 lead into the half.
2nd Half
• GCU started the second half with a
Maria Stanescu layup and
Julia Whesper three-pointer.
• The stops though weren't coming on the defensive end.
• The Lions put up a game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter shooting 6-14 from the floor with
Jade Dickson scoring six points.
• It wasn't enough though to give St. Anselm any kind of scare they rolled to an 84-46 win.

Jade Dickson led GCU with 13 points on 5-9 shooting. She picked up a double-double with 12 rebounds as well.

Maria Stanescu and
Marija Markovic each scored eight.

Niyell McCargo and
Julia Whesper chipped in five points each.
For the Hawks
• Elise MacNair scored a game-high 19 on 7-10 shooting with five boards.
• Tatum Forbes secured an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double with six assists.
• Kyla Cunningham came off the bench to score eight with seven rebounds.
