STONY BROOK, NY (Dec. 18, 2024) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball leveled up Wednesday night going out on the road to take on Division I Stony Brook. The Seawolves defense stymied the Lions in the Stony Brook 67-29 win.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court was missing a couple of pieces and struggled shooting they ball. They connected at just a 25.5% rate from the floor and were 3-18 from three.
• Stony Brook's offense shot 40% for the night doing slightly better from three, hitting 5-18.
• Rebounding was a big part of the Seawolves win. They grabbed 58 to Georgian Court's 20.
• Both teams turned the ball over plenty. The Lions lost the handle 18 times, but also forced 14 from Stony Brook.
1st Quarter
• Twice in the first quarter Georgian Court grabbed a lead. They started the game with
Tyra Lovelock making a layup following a Stony Brook turnover.
• Tied at two,
Maria Stanescu untied it with a three.
• Stanescu again gave the Lions the lead with her second three in 62 seconds and the Lions were up 8-6 with 5:43 left in the frame.
• The offense crashed after that though. GCU only scored again with 21 seconds left with
Destiny Wallace going 1-2 at the foul line.
• In the meantime, Stony Brook went on an 11-0 to take the lead and were up eight, 17-9, after the first quarter.
2nd Quarter
•
Julia Whesper started the frame with a three to bring GCU within five, 17-12.
• But GCU couldn't find consistency on offense and SBU started to pull away.
• A Stanescu jumper kept the Lions within single-digits, but Stony Brook finished the half on an 8-0 run, including hitting a jumper at the buzzer to take a 32-16 lead at the half.
3rd Quarter
• There was another long scoreless drought for GCU in the third.Â
• If not for
Samantha Jones' jumper at the buzzer, Stony Brook would have held the Lions scoreless for the final 4:47 of the third quarter.
• The Seawolves pushed their lead out past 20 and were up 47-22 going to the fourth.
4th Quarter
•
Karissa Smedley made a pair of layups early in the fourth quarter.
• The Seawolves however were in cruise control, up big.
• Georgian Court was even with Stony Brook through the first 3:30 of the fourth quarter.
• After a Smedley free throw though, the offense went cold.
• GCU was held without a point the final 6:15 as Stony Brook finished the game with another three for a 67-29 win.

Maria Stanescu led GCU scoring eight points going 2-6 from three.

Karissa Smedley added seven with a team-high six rebounds.

Destiny Wallace scored five points with six boards.
For the Seawolves
• Zaida Gonzalez was 8-18 for a game-high 17 points.
• Dallysshya Moreno finished with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.
• Brauna Wareadded 13 points and six rebounds.
