Women's Basketball Season Ends With Loss to Chestnut Hill

LAKEWOOD, NJ (March 2, 2024) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball finished up the regular season at home Saturday afternoon. The Lions fought hard with the No. 3 team in the CACC South Division, Chestnut Hill, but were outscored 44-31 in the second half and dropped the finale 74-63.

How it Happened
• Both teams shot 44% from the floor. Georgian Court was 4-12 from three and CHC 3-14.
• The line, Chestnut Hill was +10 which was one of the difference in the game. They hit 15-18 while the Lions sank just 5-11.
• Both teams turned the ball over a ton. A combined 48. GCU lost it 28 times which led to 29 CHC points. The Lions only scored 13 points off 20 Griffin giveaways.
• The Griffins held a 39-36 edge in rebounding and despite both teams pulling 12 offensive boards, the Lions scored 17 second-chance point and the Griffins nine.
First Quarter
• It was a low-scoring first quarter and neither team was on the board for the first 2:23. Safiatu Kolliegbo ended that with a steal and a score for a 2-0 Lion lead.
• The Griffins knocked in a layup with 2:56 to play in the quarter to make it a 9-8 GCU lead. That was the last points they'd score in the period. 
• Chestnut Hill went 0-4 the final 2:56 and Imani Gillette scored four points by her self to give GCU a 13-8 lead after 10 minutes.
Second Quarter
• Georgian Court continued to lead throughout the second. They pushed the difference to a game-high eight at the 5:42 mark following a Leah Snisky jumper.
• Chestnut Hill answered with a 9-0 run over 2:54 to take a one-point lead, 23-22. The Lions were 0-2 with three turnovers during the scoring run.
• The Lions didn't miss the rest of the quarter. They were 4-4 including two three-pointers from Kolliegbo and Niyell McCargo.
• Chestnut Hill kept pace and beat the buzzer on the half with a three to cut GCU's lead to two, 32-30.
Third Quarter
• The two teams traded points at the outset of the second half and four minutes in the game was tied at 40.
• That's when Chestnut Hill went on another run scoring seven straight to take a multiple-possession lead, 47-41.
• Georgian Court was able to keep it close, getting it back down to three, 49-46, but the Griffins ended the third scoring six straight over the final 3:01 and turned a two-point halftime deficit into a 55-46 lead after three.
Fourth Quarter
• In the middle of the fourth, the Lions used a 13-5 run of their own to get back to within just three, 62-59.
• Kolliegbo scored seven during the run as GCU was 6-10 and 1-2 from three.
• The Lions ran out of gas on the comeback attempt though as the Griffins finished the game outscoring the Lions by eight, 12-4.
• Over the final 3:12, CHC didn't miss going 3-3 from the floor and 4-4 at the line to put the game away, 74-63.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Safiatu Kolliegbo led all scorers with 19 points. She filled the box score with nine steals, five rebounds and four assists.
• Imani Gillette was 5-9 and had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
• Karissa Smedley was in double-figures scoring 10 on 2-7 shooting.
• Leah Snisky scored eight with seven rebounds.

For the Griffins
• Avery White scored 18 with six steals, four rebounds and four assists.
• Bridie McCann also scored 18 on 7-15 shooting.
• Emily Sekerak added 11 going 7-8 at the foul line.
• Sara Tamoun chipped in 10 points.

News and Notes
• Safiatu Kolliegbo recorded her 350th point and 50th steal of the season. 2016-17.
• Kolliegbo's nine steals are also a new Georgian Court record for steals in the NCAA era and tied for the second-most by an individual in a game this season across the country. 
• Imani Gillette also reached 350 career points. 
• Samantha Jones grabbed her 50th rebound. 
• Chestnut Hill swept the season series and GCU is now 13-19 all-time against the Griffins.
