LAKEWOOD, NJ (Jan. 18, 2025) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball had one of their best shooting days of the 2024-25 season Saturday afternoon against Post. However, it still wasn't enough to overcome the Eagles in a 74-61 loss.
How it Happened
• The Lions finished the day shooting 55.3% overall, but were just 1-9 from behind the arc.
• Post connected at a 44% clip. They hit 4-13 from three, three coming in the first half.
• The Eagles were also excellent from the free throw line. Coming into the game, Post was hitting below 65% at the line, but Saturday hit 20-24, including 20 straight at one point.
• Post's defense causes more turnovers than any other team in the CACC and Saturday was no different. They forced 37 Lion turnovers and used that to score 36 points. GCU scored 25 points from 22 Post giveaways.
• Georgian Court had a small edge rebounding the ball, 32-26, but it was Post who pulled down more on the offensive end, 7-4.
1st Quarter
• It was a great start for Georgian Court as
Alexi Hoy buried a three on the Lions first shot of the game. She then came up with a steal and
Samantha Jones finished for a 5-0 lead less than a minute in.
• A jumper from
Niyell McCargo gave the Lions an 11-3 lead. It was still an eight-point lead, 18-10 with 3:27 left to play in the quarter.
• Georgian Court went the rest of the frame though without scoring and Post cut the lead in half, 18-14, after one period.
2nd Quarter
• The scoring drought continues for the Lions as Post started the second scoring six straight and taking their first lead, 20-18.
•
Julia Whesper briefly gave the Lions the lead back, but Post went on a 14-2 run and in a blink were up 10, 34-24 with 3:14 remaining in the half.
• Georgian Court slowly clawed back. McCargo finished a three-point play and with under a minute left, Jones hit a jumper to bring the lead down to five, 36-31 at the break.
3rd Quarter
• Twice in the third the Lions made it a one-possession game with baskets from McCargo and Jones.
• Post responded though with another extended run, this time 10-0, bringing the lead back up to 13, 52-39.
• In the closing seconds of the period, Whesper collected an offensive put back just before the horn went off to finish the third. That brought GCU back to within six, 55-49.
4th Quarter
• Midway through the fourth, Post had pushed the lead back out to 10 and were looking for more. Naj White thought she was all set for an and-one, but instead was called for an offensive foul. She compounded that by getting a technical and after Whesper made both technical free throws and the Lions kept possession, this was a chance for GCU to get back into the game.
• It didn't happen like that as Post was able to get the lead back into double-figures, and this time for good.
• Post slowed things down to run out the clock and finished off the 74-61 win.
