CACC Leading Dominican Upends Lions

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Jan. 25, 2025) - Unbeaten Dominican flexed some of their muscle Saturday afternoon against Georgian Court in a CACC cross-division matchup. The Lions made it close in moments, but ultimately fell by 10, 62-52.

How it Happened
• The three ball kept Georgian Court in the game. They shot 46% from deep while Dominican hit 5-15.
• Overall, Georgian Court hit 31.5% from the floor. Dominican connected at 38.3%. At the foul line, GCU went 12-16, Dominican 11-17.
• The Lions kept their turnover numbers down from recent games. They lost the ball 17 times, but forced just 11 Dominican turnovers. Despite that, GCU outscored the Chargers 16-15 in points off turnovers.
• The Lions also won the rebounding battle, 41-38.
1st Quarter
• The Lions took a couple of leads in the first, getting baskets from Niyell McCargo and Imani Gillette and a three-ball from Alexi Hoy.
• Trailing 7-5, the Chargers went on a 14-0 run to take a commanding lead, 19-7.
• If not for a Jade Dickson jumper in the closing minute, the Lions would have gone the final six minutes scoreless.
2nd Quarter
• The Dominican lead hovered around 10 points for most of the second quarter.
• Hoy hit another three and Jade Dickson hit a free throw followed by a layup to close the gap to eight, 31-23, with 51 seconds to go in the half.
• Dominican responded quickly scoring four points in the final 36 seconds to take a 35-23 lead into the half.
3rd Quarter
• Both offenses struggled early in the second half.
• Dominican didn't score until the 6:32 mark, but still started the half on a 7-0.
• The Chargers led by as much as 19, 42-23, with under four minutes to play.
• Julia Whesper finally got the Lions on the board in the second half with a three-pointer and that gave GCU a spark.
• Georgian Court closed the period on a 14-2 run over the final 3:31.
• The Lions were 5-7 from the floor and 3-4 from three with Whesper scoring 11.
• The Chargers missed a long three at the end of the period and the lead was down to seven, 44-37.
Fourth Quarter
• With a pair of Samantha Jones free throws, the lead was down to five, 44-39 to start the final quarter.
• Dominican though responded scoring five quick points to bring the lead back to double-figures, 49-39 with 8:36 left.
• Georgian Court was unable to get it any closer than nine the rest of the way and Dominican held on for a 62-52 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Julia Whesper came off the bench to score 18 points going 7-11 from the floor and 2-5 from three with four rebounds and two assists.
• Alexi Hoy hit 3-6 from deep and scored nine points.
• Imani Gillette grabbed nine rebounds while scoring six points.
• Jade Dickson finished with five points and seven boards.

For the Chargers 
• Tanasha Mills scored a game-high 21 going 8-14 overall with five assists.
• Chidinma Ndukauba had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double with four blocked shots.
• Angelina DiMarsico was 3-6 from behind the arc and scored 11.
• Cayla Howard chipped in 14 and five rebounds. 

News and Notes
• Julia Whesper set a new career-best scoring 18 points. 
• Georgian Court's 17 turnovers are their fewest since losing the ball just 10 times at Wilmington, Dec. 3.
• Dominican got all their scoring from their starting five.
• The Lions fall to 16-33 all-time against Dominican.
