Women's Basketball Stumbles In First Home Game of 2025

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Jan. 6, 2025) - Following their CACC win Saturday afternoon, Georgian Court Women's Basketball couldn't carry the momentum over into their next game. Going against one of the stingiest defenses in Division II, the Lions offense struggled in a 62-41 loss to Queens.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court shot 28% overall hitting 4-20 from three and 7-13 at the foul line.
• Queens did most of their work inside. They were just 1-14 from deep, but 22-44 from inside the arc.
• The Lions helped Queens out turning the ball over 27 times. The Knights clogged passing lanes all afternoon and came up with 18 steals.
• The Knights also held the edge on the glass, outrebounding GCU 45-36.
1st Quarter
• Each team scored on their first possession of the game, with Tyra Lovelock hitting a three to get the Lions going.
• That 3-2 lead was the only one for Georgian Court as Queens came right down for a layup and a 4-3 lead.
Niyell McCargo fed Alexi Hoy who made a layup to keep GCU within two, 9-7, at the 7:23 mark.
• That basket from Hoy though was the last from the Lions in the quarter. They were outscored 9-0 over the final 7:22 and trailed 18-7 after 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter
• The scoring drought ended 1:35 into the second quarter when Onnieya Martin hit a jumper.
• After Tyra Lovelock went 1-2 at the line, Queens went on another extended scoring run.
• The Knight scored 14 straight and were up 36-10 with three minutes to play in the half.
• Lovelock hit another free throw and McCargo a jumper while Queens went scoreless over the final three minutes and the lead was down to  36-13 at the break.
3rd Quarter
• Lovelock started the second half hitting a pair of three-pointers bringing GCU closer, 36-19.
• The Knights responded with a layup to stop the 9-0 GCU run between the second and third quarters.
• Queens picked the defensive effort back up, allowing just six more points over the final 7:14.
• They outscored the Lions 15-6 and took a 51-25 lead into the final frame.
4th Quarter
• Queens took their largest lead of the game hitting a free throw in the first minute of the fourth quarter, going up 27, 52-25.
• The fourth though was the Lions best offensively. They were 7-16 and outscored Queens 16-11.
• That was all too little-too late though Queens ran out the clock on a 62-41 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
Tyra Lovelock scored a career-high 17 points going 4-8 from three with eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Niyell McCargo added nine points, four rebounds and three assists.
Karissa Smedley and Alexi Hoy each scored four making a pair of field goals.

For the Knights
• Nkiru Awaka recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked three shots and came up with three steals.
• Jalea Abrams scored 16 with three assists.
• Chinyere Ukaegbu grabbed 10 boards and came up with six steals.

News and Notes
• Lovelock's career day included a career-high in points, rebounds and blocked shots.
• Her three blocked shots match a season-high for a Lion this season.
• This was the Lions first game with Queens since the 2008-09 season. The Lions fall to 1-5 all-time against the Knights.
• Monday's game was the Lions final nonconference game of the 2024-25 season. They'll be playing CACC games the rest of the way.

Up Next
• Georgian Court steps back into conference play Saturday, Jan. 11 as they host Caldwell at 12 pm. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Georgian Court men who take on the Cougars following the women's game.
