LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University soccer team defeated Wilmington University, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon on Investors Savings Bank Field, improving to 12-7 (10-2 CACC) and securing no less than a second seed when they begin their 2008 title defense in next week’s CACC Tournament.
Sophomore Kelly Lyons netted four goals in the victory, giving her six over the past two games and a conference-high 18 on the season. Lyons gave GCU a speedy 1-0 victory when she put in a Candace Seaton pass at 2:21 for her sixth game-winning score of the year. Alley Abbate fed Lyons for another score at 25:32 as Georgian Court entered the half up, 2-0.
Lyons clinched the hat trick at 57:13 on a Taylor Reinecke dish before ending her scoring spree at 80:28 on an assist from Shannon Mastrogiovanni. Freshman Latifa Kelly scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick at 81:16 made necessary by a Wilmington (9-6-1, 8-3-1 CACC) handball, icing the victory for the Lions.
GCU goalkeeper Lindsay Hammond (Sr.) made five saves in securing her eighth shutout of the year.
Georgian Court ends its regular season Thursday with a non-conference home game at 3:30 PM vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College before hosting a CACC quarterfinals match next Tuesday (11/3) at 2:00 PM vs. a to-be-determined opponent. The Lions will honor its three seniors prior to the game (Abbate, Allyson Buckley, Hammond) with a ceremony commencing at about 3:15 PM.
