LAKEWOOD, NJ- The top-ranked Georgian Court University Lions made quite the postseason debut as they trounced the #4 Wilmington University (7-11) Wildcats, 23-7, Saturday afternoon in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament semifinals on the Georgian Court campus.
Natalie Bermudez (Jr.-Toms River, Monsignor Donovan) highlighted the contest with her 100th collegiate goal with 5:45 remaining in the game. The Lions will take on either #2 Philadelphia University or #3 Chestnut Hill College in Sunday's final at 1:00 PM.
Laura Housel (Jr.-West Caldwell, James Caldwell) gave the Lions a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game (29:41) when she scored on a Ryan McGrath (So-Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) assist. GCU would go on to score nine more unanswered goals before Wilmington's Kelly Wojciechowski (Sr.-Baltimore, MD) put the Wildcats on the board with 11:45 remaining in the first half.
GCU came roaring out in the second stanza, as they increased their advantage to 17-1 with goals from McGrath (26:13 remaining) and Kara Sanford (Pine Beach, NJ/Toms River South) (24:25 remaining).
Lauren Conaty (So.-Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Boro), Daryl Carr (So.-Brick, NJ/Brick Township) and McGrath registered hat tricks for GCU. Alley Abbate (Jr.-Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional), Shannon Mastrogiovanni (So.-Monroe Township, NJ/East Brunswick), Amanda Dilger (So.-Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township) and Christine Flaherty (Jr.-Howell, NJ/Howell) scored two goals apiece.
Jessica Graybeal (Fr.-Havre de Grace, MD) and Danielle Niccoli (So.-Sparrows Point, MD) each scored two goals to lead the Wildcats.
GCU netminder, Christine Latteri (Jr.-West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) made three saves in 35:31 to improve to 15-2 on the year.
Amanda Smith (Jr.-Aberdeen,MD) denied 11 Georgian Court shot attempts in the complete game defeat for Wilmington.
